CB 550 dies when coming to a stop
« on: October 22, 2013, 09:56:39 PM »
Hello all! I have come to seek your infinite wisdom once again.

My rebuilt 550 motor is running great! (Timing has been set, carbs cleaned and vacuum synced and valves adjusted) the thing runs like a raped ape.

My problem is that when I am slowing down from any sort of high speed (Say 50 MPH or so) The bike will occasionally slow down and die during deceleration with the clutch pulled in. It only does it sometimes and when it does I just shift down a few gears and pop the clutch and it fires right back up. I have a theory that maybe my float levels are incorrect and im flooding the engine? or is this a symptom of a too small pilot jet? The PO upped the mains to 98 over the stock 90 but the pilots are still at a stock 42.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like a charging issue? Have you checked/replaced your battery?

Sounds like air screws and/or idle circuit to me. Does it idle by itself okay?

I hold the clutch in just rolling to a stop to facilitate faster braking? I just do it when I'm riding on the freeway or some back roads where I come up to a stop. as far as the other questions it idles perfectly all of the other times I stop. I cant seem to reproduce the stall every time. I dont have a filter I am currently running  velocity stacks with a fine mesh screen, although the longer I ride the bike the more I feel this is not a good idea. it seems that it stalls more frequently when I am coasting in from a higher gear. I dont have air screws on my carbs, I have mixture screws that I believe are either 2 or 2 1/2 turns out....They are more like an off on deal rather than afine tuning adjustment

Here is a picture 'cause everyone loves pictures

The push-pull cables on my CB350F will allow the throttle to close to the idle stop when the throttle is released, closing by the carburetor return spring.  However, the throttle can be closed more by turning the grip slightly further in the off direction.  This will often cause it to stall as the idle is reduced below the normal setting.  Perhaps this is what you are doing when coming to a stop (i.e. twisting beyond the idle stop).
