1973 BMW R75/5 Toaster-tank
« on: October 28, 2013, 04:16:48 PM »
I've wanted a /5 Toaster since I first saw one at a breakfast rally last summer.   There's something old-school-cool about the chrome side panels on the fuel tank (I guess that is why I like the Honda CB160 and CB77 too).   Anyway, I found a good deal on one on CL last week, and drove from Palmyra to Long Island and back yesterday (about 7 hr. round trip) to get it.   It is a '73 with a production date of 9/72.   It appears to be a short-wheelbase model.

It hasn't been run in about 3 or 4 years, and has some nasty old fuel in the tank along with a bit of rust.  So, first order of
business will be to clean the tank and carbs.    Then, fluids, new few hose, fastener check, and finally start it up!
The battery holds a charge, electrics are all in order, and the engine cranks well.

The seat is a Corbin solo seat, but the stock one was included (although, it needs to be re-covered).

Yes, it is a 750.     The /5 was available in three "sizes":
R50 = 500cc, 32 HP
R60 = 600cc, 40 HP
R75 = 750cc, 50 HP

Unlike the Honda, where, for example, the CB400F, CB550, and CB750 are actually smaller and lighter for the lower CC's, going up to bigger and heavier, the three model /5 bikes are identical except for cylinder/piston size, and carbs.

That's how it starts.    That's how I ended up getting my CB400F.     I saw one of those at a breakfast rally.  Before I saw it, I didn't even know I wanted one.     So, I read up on them, and liked what I read, then I got one.   Same thing with the /5.

Yes, sometimes.  About a year ago, I was looking for a 400F too. Then I saw/sat on one at a bike show, and suddenly didn't want one anymore. Too small for highway use and already had my RD350....
So now it's the R75....ha!

The CB400F will do highway, but yes, it is a bit too small.    The R75 will be much better on the highway.

Yes, the Corbin is a nice seat -- can't wait to see what it feels like riding it, rather than sitting on it in my garage making vroom-vroom sounds  :)

I'm pretty happy with the purchase.   ;D

It's likely to feel great in the garage but more like a thinly upholstered cinder block after an hour on the road. Congrats on the purchase. It's a beautiful classic that you could ride anywhere.
