Custom headlight
« on: November 14, 2013, 12:03:10 AM »
Hey guys, I no longer have my 750 but I'm looking to put on a 5 3/4 bobber headlight on my '72 CB450. I just wanted to know what mounting options I have since I like the bottom mount headlights but I can't think of any good places to mount on the bike. Also, re-wiring? I'm pretty sure I won't be able to stuff all the wiring in the new headlight so where can I re-route to and how?

Your mounting options my only be to fab some custom mounts to fit the smaller headlight. There are some mounts out there that attach around the fork tubes and to the side of the light, but you didn't say if the light mounts from the side or other location.
As far as the rats nest of wires in the bucket, it's almost impossible to HIDE all of them!!  If you are going CUSTOM= different headlight /tail light/ and TS you'll have to rewire and that will help to remove most of the rats nest. I've rewired lots of 750s on choppers but not the Black Bombers (450s) You might check here for wire color codes to help!!

Well what does re-wiring consist of? Stripping back and hiding the wires under the gas tank?
I want to get rid if the gauges so that's a cluster of wires right there already.

There are some stock motorcycles that had the same problem and so the electrics were hidden in a black plastic box near the front of the gas tank.
I just do not remember which bike it was.
I have built custom bikes and wrapped al of the extra electrics in one of those fuzzy thing you put around a seat belt strap. They come in colors too.

First off....there is no such thing as a "bobber" headlight.

if you get a bottom mount that mounts with a single bolt, you can run a piece of flat stock on the back side of the gauge mounts (under the tree and held in place by the gauge mount nuts) and then drill the flat stock so that the mounting bolt bolts to the flat stock. I saw that once on a 450 in a junkyard.

When HONDA built these bikes , they went WAY overboard on wires.  You have three circuits to worry about, Ignition,Charging,Accessories
On my chopper (avatar) I basically have 5 wires running the length of the bike.
3 to the front= Hi/Lo headlight and horn.
2 to the back= tail light and brake light
All my switches are mounted on a panel just behind the engine. You have to have wires for the charging system. These wires can be as short as 3' from the stator up to the battery area.
The ignition/starting can be as simple as 1 wire to the coils from + power.

This is about as simple as you can go!!!

I've included two pictures. One of my bike and a Holiday Customs one what I want it to look like. I'm sure you all will be able to tell which one is which  ;)

It looks like the HC one is mounted on the bottom tree as well as being an older 450 era. Can I mount/drill on the bottom as well? Do I have options to relocate the front brake solenoid? If so, where could I re-locate?
