Save the IV for the 915 with Carrilos and b/l crank.

Hold the phone. Which build is that for?  Awesomeness!!

For when after the Blaster 836 top end fails.  I figure, hopefully, at least 2 years or more down the road.

I suppose if you like to pin the throttle wide open all the time.  ;)  The 915 sounds mighty Tige like.

Tige's 915 is the inspiration but that plan is on the back burner till way down the road.  The only 915 concern is proper cooling for here in SoCal even with an oil cooler.

For the 836, I'm just wondering whether a JMR Stage IV is worth it without lightening/balancing the crank, and if keeping stock studs and rods, since I am not splitting the cases.

In the meantime Don, I was finally able to cut in front of you on this 78 550.
Cheers!

That 78 is beautiful. Great score!

Your 836 will be fine without a cooler as long as you don't camp in gridlock traffic for extended periods. Mine does just fine without a cooler.

I am going to run a Seatrab in my Bionic Mongrel build given the level of investment in the motor.

I think you'll be fine with the Stage III but I would use HD studs and a MLS head gasket.

Do you think there is a downside in swapping out the studs one at a time with the cases still together?

BTW...the cooling concern is with the future 915, not the upcoming 836 although I am planning on a cooler.

Also fully expect you to spend obscene amounts of money on ARP hex flange bolts and nuts!

I see no issue with a stud-by-stud replacement. In addition to HD studs, HD nuts  :)

Just on the 550 I needed to soak bottom stud threads with PB blaster and use torch on the underside/indide of the case to break the studs free.

You advise Cal, and I will follow (to a reasonable extent)!

Page 4, halfway down. The hex flange head bolts. Order the nuts too  :D

The site is a bit clumsy for ordering massive quantities, but when its time, I'll give you an Excel file to order from... Maybe

That 915 is going to be a beast, Kevin.

I picked up one of the smaller Setrab oil cooler's from a local dealer in Long Beach.
