Hey Buster, bummer about getting the wrong muffler, I'm sure those guys would swap it out for you if you asked, probably be some shipping costs though...

That's funny you asked about the muffler/header not being supported, DaveBarbier just asked the same question a few posts up.  To answer your question, No I'm not using a bracket, I intended to originally, but to be honest, it is pretty secure.  The shorty muffler is very light, especially compared to the big clunky blown out megaphone that I replaced it with.  THAT muffler did have a bracket.  I check the header constantly to see if there is any play in it and so far so good.  8 exhaust studs/nuts holding the collars on the header provide quite a bit of support and a pretty strong mounting point.

Should I be concerned with this?  Am I the only one running a 4-1 header without a support tab?

LOL - I totally missed the question two entires up about that. No - if you think it is secure, and have been checking, then I am sure it is. I was asking because I am still thinking of ordering the shorty, and it would be nice not to have to weld a tab on if I don't have to.

It was pretty simple, actually (and I know "simple" is a relative term regarding someone's experience and skill, but I'm an idiot, so compare it with that baseline).  The seat came with 4 bolts pre-installed and hanging down, so I drilled 2 holes in the cross member that is just outside the battery box and the bolts line up perfectly with those holes.  I then cut those pre-installed bolts to a manageable size and tossed some nuts on the ends, bingo.  It doesn't move around at all.  If anything, I will add another cross member to provide more support and prevent any possible sagging of the seat.

Pictures would be great. Did you make the seat yourself or buy it like that?

Here are a few pics of my Rube Goldberg can hanger. Surprisingly strong and effective. Basically a small piece of steel bent into a L shape, attached to the clamp on one end and the center stand bracket on the other. Technically you could still keep the center stand on the bike, but I don't. I do slip it on when I need to do maintenance though  - takes about 15 seconds. In addition to the clamp and L bracket, the only thing needed is a bolt that fits through the center stands bracket with some nuts and washers.








I'm thinking about picking up the same muffler as well for my 4-1 on my '77 CB750K. I saw in another member's build (Stoli) that he rigged up a bracket for it. I asked him about it and he posted these pictures and a little description of how he set it up. Thought I'd share in case you wanted to get some extra security.
