General Ebay/PayPal rant
« on: November 29, 2013, 08:21:36 AM »
Years ago when I started buying and selling on Ebay I was very happy. But now every sale I make only pisses me off more. And since there are so few alternatives, particularly for car and MC parts, I am left getting screwed.

Not only have costs skyrocketed, but they are charging a 10% fee on the shipping. WTF. Shipping is a pass through, I don't make any money on it.

And PayPal now sometimes holds your payment for weeks. It won't even allow you to access the shipping portion. I sold an antique toy steam engine for a friend last spring. The buyer was in South Africa, so the shipping was over $500. No way was I going to front that much out of pocket. Finally after 2 weeks of waiting for the money to be released I called PP and got them to release it early so I could ship.

Several years ago congress changed banking rules to force banks to release deposited funds within a reasonable time frame (I think it's 5 business days right now). I think that the same rule needs to be applied here. PP is getting WEEKS of float on MY damn money. It's just not right.

I haven't really sold anything lately but it sure does sound different.  They charge 10% on shipping?  How?

Per Ebay:

Final value fees are calculated based on the total amount of the sale and are charged per item.

The total amount of the sale is the final price of the item, shipping charges, and any other amounts you may charge the buyer. Sales tax is not included.

Ebay gets to be a worse and worse deal every year. I don't have a problem paying the commission on the sale price. But getting dinged on shipping isn't right. Now I am going to have to raise the shipping costs to adjust for this, which will make my items less competitive and less likely to sell.

Ah ....   I guess they got tired of people charging $1 for an item and $80 for shipping.  Hurts the folks that were doing it right.

You would think though when you set up the shipping through them they would know you weren't trying to cheat.

I only had one problem with PayPal but ton of problems with eBay when selling.
Just recently i closed both accounts because I am tired of dealing with BS.

Tried selling my photo gear and someone bought something within seconds of it being posted which was a tell for a scammer. Checked their accound and sure enough - he buys a lot of small items for $1 to build up feedback and then once in a while he buys something expensive Nd claims he never got it, it's damaged etc, to scam people out of money. Also, he had PO box as address which I did not allow but eBay did not allow me to cancell the transaction. Talked to the guy and he refused to back out either which means eBay will punish me with their fees. He was using the typical bully tactics. I ended up calling eBay and making them refund all the fees. Few days later, eBay says they will be reviewing my accound and few days later after that they suspended my accound for "suspicious activity".

Not gonna use them again thats for sure.

OK, my general eBay rant "supplement" is the number of cheap Chinese products that continue to populate my searches.
Try searching for any popular sportbike and the amount of crappy import junk is astounding!

I think it's time to pull the plug on eBay.

Same problem you have Danny, I am currently going through.... I make a sale, the funds now needs to be held what seems to be 3 weeks. I called and ask why all of a sudden is this going on? They mentioned because I was new to selling on ebay... Gave my Feb of this yr from when I first started selling items. None of that is true... I have been selling parts for over 4 years now......

Isn't it the ebay guy the one who wants to build a super fast and prohibitively expensive tube to ride in from L.A. to the S. F. Bay area?

We use eBay and PayPal a fair amount.

If the non paying bidders and idiots who cannot read descriptions were the only issue, it wouldn't be so bad.  Ebay is incredibly expensive and very difficult to deal with.  Ebay recently changed the Buy-It-Now rules so the amount must be +30% over the original listing price - totally ridiculous.

PayPal is incredibly frustrating.  We've had funds frozen a few times.  The most recent being a 'dispute' where a customer ordered parts and filed a 'goods not received' dispute after a week - he lives in New Zealand AND selected the slowest shipping we offer - 1st-class mail.  PayPal frozen our funds and then inexplicably refunded the customer the money.  Now we are battling the customer to get paid again...

Previously, we received an 'under review' email from PayPal a day after receiving payment and shipping the goods.  Neither the customer nor ourselves triggered this - and PayPal promptly refunded the customer the money as they considered it a fraudulent transaction.  Now this was a customer who ordered from us multiple times in the weeks before this... so go figure how they determined this.   Fortunately the customer paid us immediately with a credit card.  Stupid stuff from PayPal.

I only buy off the feebay and I am sure as hell never gonna sell on it now after hearing they are screwing it up even more.
I'll just take a slight loss on my items I want to sell and keep them for sale on forums like these.

Yes, I am trying to sell more through the forums as well. Paypal actually works better when there isn't an eBay transaction involved.

I also recently sold an Airhawk cushion outside of eBay after it went through 3 cycles without a buyer. One of the watchers contacted me and made an offer via the messaging, so I was able to sell for a price that worked for me and avoid the 10% fee. Without the fee the selling price was only a few dollars less than the opening bid would have been anyway.

I would have less (not none, but less) objection over the holding of funds if they didn't also apply the hold to shipping. If I arrange the shipping through eBay then they should give me access to the funds from the client to pay for it.

My experience wit PayPal and Ebay has always been non eventful, but I can't say the same for the sellers from China. I ordered some 1157 light sockets for a some custom tail/brake lights I am making. Cheap ($3.18 for 4 of them), shipping was the usual slow 30 days. When I get them they are completely the wrong item. So I contact them to explain. The only way to contact them after the sale is to open a case, which I do and explain the situation that I got the wrong ones and to please correct it and send the correct items. The sellers reply was " listing states 15-25 days shipping, please wait a little longer for delivery." Ok, here we go. >:( I message back that delivery is not the issue, you sent the wrong items, can you please check the correct items and forward them to me. They reply " We will refund your money." I  ask if they have the correct part in stock or are you listing things for sale that you don't even have? They reply " What you got is all we have, we will refund your money." I decide after getting my refund I will leave negative feedback for the way the list items not in stock. My daughter convinces me that since they did refund my money promptly that I shouldn't leave negative feedback. I agree and decide to leave a neutral one instead with the explanation. I go to the original listing transaction details to leave the feedback and see that "this item has been ended, but the seller has modified a new listing" I go and see that they relisted my parts at a higher price and added $1.99 shipping to it. They were $1.59 for 2 and free shipping when I ordered. So I "Ask the seller a question" and ask if they have this item in stock? They reply " yes we do, they are $1.69". You MF'ers. I immediately go in and leave them negative feedback on my original deal. They message me the next days asking to remove the negative feedback. I explain what the issue was and how I now pissed that they lied to me and then relisted the item for more money plus shipping. They ask what they can do to get me to remove the negative FB. I tell them to send me the items I ordered. They say they will if I remove the FB. I tell them I will remove it if and when I receive the parts and not before. Keep in mind now that I want them to send them to for free as I have already been refunded. I figure it is fair that it costs them the $3 to not have the FB for poor business practices. This morning they asked for my ship address to verify shipping the new parts. In the meantime I had already ordered replacements from another seller at a slightly higher price. So now I will have extras and can just make more of the custom lights for sale to members.

Now that rant was following this ordeal with Autozone. I first call Advance Auto to see if they carry "Universal 1157 light sockets?" They say yes, but we only have one in stock and it is $4.99. I then call Autozone and get the young Zombie behind the computer who must think that if they step foot off the 2 tiles their feet are planted on they will get an electrical shock that will end their life. I ask if Autozone carries universal 1157 light sockets? He says " what vehicle is it for?" I ask if he knows the definition of "Universal". He checks the computer and tells me " the computer says we don't have any here." I ask him if Autozone carries one at all. He say "Sir, I just told you the computer says we don't have any in the store. Now I'm started to get frustrated and tell him "I didn't ask if you have one in the store but does Autozone carry one at all?" He says "The computer does not show one at all" I say "fine, now would you please walk over to the light bulb rack in the store and check to see if you have what I need? He comes back after  minute and Lo and Behold he says "we have 2 different kinds, one larger than the other." I ask him "How is that possible when the computer says you don't even carry them? Now you  understand my frustration when you tell me what the computer says. How much are they?" He replies that they are both $9.99 each." WTF, thanks but no thanks. And that's when I hung up.

I feel your pain Powderman!

The quality of customer service at the retail level is bloody ridiculous.
You can't seem to get straight or even accurate info from staff these days and they wonder why more and more business is lost to online vendors.

I will not purchase anything from China on eBay anymore. I resent that eBay has become a junk yard littered with bogus Chinese listings too. I'm also wary about purchasing items from overseas as well due to limited tracking info.

He11, if you want it done right, do it yourself.

I don't mind dealing with the Chinese, even knowing the issues that may arise because the savings in price are usually substantial. I know it may take longer so I plan accordingly when dealing with China. If the transaction doesn't go my way I have always found Ebay/Paypal to back me up and refund my money without having to send the items back. in this case I paid about 1/20th- 1/30 of what I would have paid locally. It is easier to deal with the issues from China than I care to deal with the incompetence of uneducated morons at Americans retail outlets.

The release money three days after delivery, if tracking is uploaded.

I had seats delivered in Sweeden, Switzerland, Canada, and Australia on the 10th, called PayPal today, and they released it. Took a total of ten minutes to get it done.

Though, you have to call them and make them do it, most of the time. Otherwise, they'll let it sit for a while and draw more interest on it.

I hate it, and love it. Where else can you get a worldwide audience of that size?

Ebay doesn't hold everyone's money. They only hold money on accounts with little to no activity for long periods or those with poor feedback. My money is never held. I have a PayPal credit card and I can draw on it as soon as the sale is paid for.
