Bike Involved in Hit & Run - What's Broken? :(
« on: December 01, 2013, 10:01:27 PM »
Hey guys my 1975 CB550 was parked outside a bar in Dallas TX. Someone hit the bike and left the scene, fortunately there were no injuries! The main issue seems to be the forks, I don't know much about forks so I was hoping someone can help me out. I've actually ridden the bike a few miles like this. Rim doesn't seem bent, no wobbling, and the tire rolls smooth.

After I found the bike I pushed it a block to my house and called the police. They said since I moved the bike they won't investigate. I even went down to the vehicle crimes investigation unit and they told me the same thing. There's a Dallas police camera right next to where the bike was parked -.- they wont even look at the tape to find a license plate number.

Thanks!

File a freedom of information request.

Loosen all the bolts for the front forks and see if everything "pops" back into place.

while straddling the front with the wheel between your legs pull on the handlebars to try to align the front.  Look as though it can be done..Larry

If you can get the front wheel off the ground you can loosen the triple tree/ fork bolts and possibly rotate the fork uppers to see it they are bent. that will also make it easier to straighten the fork it it's just tweaked a little.

Looks like the forks got twisted in the triple tree. I had the same thing with my Valkyrie. Loosen the upper and lower fork  clamp bolts and rotate it with the straddle technique others have mentioned until you have everything aligned. Ride it and re tweak as needed. You'll know pretty quick if anything is bent, but I'm pretty confident you've just got  fork twist.

Micheal, you may want to take a very close look at the upper triple; look for cracks in the area where it clamps around the fork tubes.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Hey Scottly!

I used the extremely technical and very precise "knee tweek" method to get it lined back up! Thanks for the advice! I'm going to look over the bike for any cracks or damage. I need to use the bike for transportation until I can get a car, then I'll be doing a complete rebuild and fixing a head gasket leak.

I'll be posting in the WTB section for the other parts that got smashed but if anyone has some cheap parts lying around sent to 75206...

1. Front Fender - the only pristine shiny thing on my bike :( got hit the hardest
2. Throttle tube - white plastic tube around handlebar
3. Front brake master cylinder
4. Right & Left Controls
5. Push & pull throttle cables and clutch cable for clubman bars

Thanks for the info guys!

-Michael
