Show me your center stand stopper (4 into 1 exhaust peoples) :)
« on: December 06, 2013, 10:24:52 AM »
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=115536.0

Yes I have searched and found a few threads on this, but I figure there have to be more people who have done this

I gave my center stand away (not smart) originally thinking I would get a Yoshi-style pipe

But now I have the triple-A and I miss the ease the stand provides for all aspect of working on the machine ie: wheel removal

I just bout a new one on ebay (sadly without the pin. Waiting for that) In the meantime...please show me your stoppers

thanks  :)

Mine is nothing more than flat bar, bent in 90 degrees and tightened under the passenger peg, will take a picture when I get home.

You don't have any issues with it twisting (front to back with the single mounting-point)?

Anybody put it on the exhaust side to "hide" it better behind the pipe?

Again I am waiting for the pin...There must be a way to build it into the exhaust-hanger bracket?

My Triple A has the shorter megaphone, so this might not work for you, but I used an extra long bolt in the muffler support mount, and catches the end of the center stand.  The load isn't on the megaphone, since it's bolted to the frame there too.  I'll snap a pic and post back.

Regarding the other forms of stop, the idea that I've always seen (and what was originally employed on my F2) is a stop bolted to one of the swingarm pivot pinch clamps.  The stop is a wide flat tab that hits the top part of the centerstand, bent to adjust the height of the centerstand.  This is an easy solution, but make sure to use a substantial piece of metal for the task.  Whoever made the one for my F2 used steel strapping, and it deflected over time.  A friend's F1 has a nice tab made out of 1/4 inch steel.

And, not to over think such a simple modification, but the other key to getting the tab method to work well is to get sufficient torque on that pivot pinch clamp.  I add a spacer in between the clamp ends to limit deflection, which seems to work well.  (I think I used/modified an ignition coil spacer/standoff)  Just make the spacer short enough so that the "clamp" still squeezes down on the pivot pin.  If you just bolt the tab to the clamp, the tab will move around, requiring occasional (and frustrating) adjustments.  No good in my book.

I ran into the same issue with the centerstand hitting the chain, asked the forum , came up with  ideas like what you have here or remove centerstand.... didn't want to do that.  So I ended up removing the two bolts on the center stand pivot rod, put in longer bolts and fenderwashers on the top, so when the stand is up it is stopped by the fenderwashers. An okay idea but will improve it this spring with an off set bar mounted bolt to bolt, again over the stand, might add some rubber bumpers ,not sure yet. I also trimmed back where you put your foot when engaging it, there's no pipes on that side with headers so it doesn't need to stick out so far.

I'm back to stock 4-4 exhaust, but during the time I ran a 4 into 1 exhaust I left the center stand off. Whenever I wanted to work on the bike, I used a crowbar end cut the correct length to slip into the center stand in place of the regular pivot
axle, which is a tight fit. I would just hold the center stand in the right position, insert my faux axle and lift the bike on the center stand in the usual way. Had the advantage of a cleaner look, lighter weight, and center stand on demand so to speak.

A piece of 3/4 OD tubing works well for the center stand pivot. I put washers and cotter pins on both ends.

Since I put the 550F 4-1 header on my 500 my center stand resides in the garage, I slide it back in if I'm doing an oil change or anything else that requires the rear wheel to be off the floor.

My stoppers look like the ones shown, I found a centerstand that was narrowed and it fit my bike with the 4-2 hooker header. I shimmed it to the right side and it fits up tight to the muffler.

When I had a 4-2 on my 500 I just used a small piece of flat steel bar, fixed to the stand pivot using a slightly longer pinch bolt (on the right side as you sit on the bike). Worked a treat, and so inconspicuous that I haven't even bothered to remove it, now that I have the OEM 4-4 fitted.
