Winter warning!
« on: December 10, 2013, 09:34:36 AM »
So I went out to the garage and started or tried to wake the dormant ride.   Things did not sound well.    I ended up kick starting her and everything running wise is normal.    When it came to electric start, things are not good.   Pulled the stator cover off and found this.

I run normal oil but temps were a little below freezing.  Reminder to self ! Next time kick it over a few times before hitting that button.

About a year ago I was having issues with the electric start making a god awful noise.  Pulled the cover and my reduction gear was broken to bits just like yours.  Turns out it was the spindle part of the starter.  It had an ever so slight wiggle from the bearing (?) wearing a slightly.  Caused just enough vibration to bang the reduction gear into bits though.  Replaced both from a member on here selling the very parts i needed and its been good since.

I wouldn't think that would have anything to do with oil or cold as those parts aren't really in oil

Here is the link:  sorry but I took the videos down from youtube but it has some pictures of my reduction gear.

I don't think he meant that the gears are submersed in the oil. He meant the oil in the crankcase was too thick due to the temperature and made too much resistance for the starter to overcome.
