Re-using wrist pins? (cb450)
« on: December 23, 2013, 01:46:19 AM »
Alright I melted my 450 pistons. there are a ton of overbores but im not really in the position financially to get my bike all hopped up, I just need to get one of the rolling under its own power. I see a few stock sized on ebay but they're usually really high and sold individually. I found one stock set but it doesn't look like it has the wrist pin. Is it alright to re use the ones in my current engine?

As long as they are not too loose in the rods, they will be fine.  Gudgeon pins don't normally wear that much as they are hard chromed.  ;D

Yeah mate, if your wrist pins don't appear to be damaged, and are still a nice fit in the conrods and pistons, go for it. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

With that sort of damage to the pistons, it's unlikely the cylinders will pass muster - have a machinist check them out. Putting new standard pistons in cylinders that don't meet spec is a waste of your money.
In most cases an overbore is not an attempt for more performance, it's an attempt to restore the cylinders to spec. We generally like them to actually be round.
Also, the 450 has a ridiculously small spec for cylinder taper (less than 0.001").
I rebuild lots of 450 engines, rarely do the cylinders meet specs, I nearly always have to bore them to 2'nd over minimum.
