Cb400f front brake tube
« on: January 01, 2014, 05:51:24 PM »
Can the front brake tube be eliminated and a new brake line be threaded directly into the caliper? Thanks

Yes. You can find a matching fitting if you really want to go straight in, or just use a standard banjo fitting with the correct banjo bolt (M10x1 I think but not 100% sure, it's not the usual Honda banjo thread though) - however, the threads are not deep and you may have to shorten the bolt slightly. There's a steel flare seat sitting at the bottom of the hole, it's easy to pull out with a self tapping screw turned into the centre hole. You should remove this seat to use a banjo. Without machining the area around the hole you will need two banjo washers under the banjo itself to raise it above the counterbore but this isn't a big deal. A shallow angle (15 or 20 degree?) banjo fitting will point the flex line straight at the support loop.

Bodi, whilst that fitting seems to come out of a 750 caliper I have tried many times to get one out of a 500 (same as 400) and never suceeded

This is the problem I'm having. I'm buying a new caliper from David Silver but I don't think I can salvage the old tube....it's really stuck in there. I figured I'll just get a proper sized line and eliminate that goofy thing. Thanks for the info.

On my 75 CB400F I put a 30 degree banjo fitting with the banjo bolt at the caliper. I went to all SS from the master to the caliper. Much better then the rubber but was a pain making the bends.
Almost there!

As far as using 2 crush washers, the washer sits on top of the lip around the threads for the banjo. Tightening the banjo causes the washer to "cup" and I have brake fluid seeping out. I don't think I'll find a crush washer small enough to fit inside the recessed banjo hole in the caliper. I'm thinking I'll have to grind that lip down to create a flat surface for the washer to seal. Any suggestions? Thanks .

See the pictures on the attached document , the fittings listed at "3" are the ones you need, but i dont have them any more and the prices are 6 years old!!
