Soldering Stator Wires?
« on: January 04, 2014, 04:44:14 PM »
I've ordered two stators off of ebay in the last two months and each one of them has been damaged. On the latest, one of the 'yellow' wires from the regulator/rectifier has snapped off at the windings. I can see the nub sticking out above the varnish. Is it possible to reconnect the wire by soldering it back in place? How do I extract enough of the wire from the varnish to make a good connection? Will the heat of the solder compromise the varnish? And how do I coat the soldered join to insulate it? If I can't repair it, how do I ensure that the third ebay purchase isn't equally as junky? Is there an after-market alternative?

Thanks for any help.

I recall a thread a few years ago, where the original poster had received two bad 550 stators in a row. It turned out he was installing the stators backwards into the cover, damaging the wiring each time. If I recall correctly, the main clue was when he mentioned a "crunching" sound when he tightened the stator bolts!!?? ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

If you can scrape the varnish off enough and get solder to flow with a good iron, just test the connection and cover it with an epoxy

IF: you do try to solder make sure you use a heat sink, it be pretty easy to damage the shellac (could be a modern synthetic too)
You can also use clear dollar store nail polish to repair the shellac insulation before closing. Use of heat shrink or liquid electrical tape to protect your solder joint would help too.

You have a pic of what you need to fix?
