In for a penney in for a pound. I'm going foreward while watching for metal shavings or other problems. An Aussie drag bike guy said this works I just didn't get any details. I was advised to go 24V with a 900 starter so I went this route.

I do agree the 900 Honda deal may be better but I said I would post my results. Anyone brave enough to give the 900/919/1100 starter a whirl?

When I spin the short block backwards it spins the starter and the gears sound OK. I'll give them a dose of assembly lube and crank this thing with the side cover off. I have an old welded one maybe I'll make a cut-away to contain the oil.
Anyway, now we know.

Correct as long as you get the higher wattage starter.

You will need to look at the casting number on the starter. The wattage/horsepower rating is stamped onto the body of the starter. I do not remember right now the exact wattage for the "better" starter. I've got a box with several of them in the shop. It has been my expereince that the 750DOHC has the weaker starter but i'm sure they also put the higher hp starter on them at some point. The CB900 and CB1100's have the stronger starter.

Keep in mind even if the pitch is correct, but pressure angles are wrong..it may be short lived.

In Laymems terms.. If it visibly does not fit the same as stock.. Something is going to wear faster..

Yeah but.... in laymans terms faster wear may be irrelavent if it only gets used sparingly vs on the road over many years

Only one way to find out and that's what I said I'd do. Find out. Thanks for all input, that's why this site works so well, people with different experiences exchanging ideas.
I more interested in the big Honda starter swap now and hoping someone can post pictures.

I won't let it fill the motor with shrapnel, I'll add some assembly lube and see if the gears fall in love or fight it out! I may even cut a dyno cover open so I can see inside while it starts. I've got one that's pretty bashed and gas welded. It's the one I was considering cutting down anyway.

Long overdue update, the motor had a tight spot which I've never found the cause of. This winter will be time to open it back up.
The Hayabusa starter was probably not the best choice but at least the gear mismatch didn't make shrapnel. Mine may need a rebuild, it doesn't seem to be an improvement.
I was looking back through the cb900 / 1100 info. The starter that seems to be the one is Mitsuba 31200-438-018 .800kw and SM220 on the end casting, for cb900c through 1100f it appears to be 80 through 83.
I haven't found any info the newer starters fit early bikes but they are way cheaper used.

FWIW.... a stock starter turns my 1000 10.5:1 just fine with a good battery

Don, give some consideration to a 24 volt set up no matter which starter you use. You'd be surprised how much more grunt you get even with a stock sohc starter. I originally had a 1100F starter on the new build but it failed(used crap) so I put a stock sohc stater on it and I've not experienced cranking problems to date firing up the high compression1030cc engine. My 1325cc, 13.5-1 Kaw has a dohc starter on it set up for 24volts. Fires up with no hesitation.

This one is an 1124 stroker with an old style ARD. It was roller started in the day. I can't seem to kick it over even with the plugs out and after replacing the entire kick start mechanism. That might be a clue to what's wrong with it. I want to put it back on the engine stand and begin to remove things until I see the issue.
My goal is a close approximation of the way my friend raced it, but roller starting is a bit extreme for me.

When you double the voltage on a starter motor, you get 4x the power (watts). It was common practice to run 6V VW starters on 12V; the motor handled the extra volts with no problems, but the "holding coil" in the solenoid would burn out eventually. When this happened, the starter would engage normally, then the pinion would retract from the flywheel ring gear and just spin.

I ran a 12v 1500 based motor in a 6v 64 beetle with the stock starter for years. 87mm cylinders, dual port ported heads, my brother still has that motor.

At some point this bike was used for bar hopping and an occasional street race. I'm not sure that was in the current configuration though. When he ran the flywheel it twisted the end off of a crank.

It spins like crazy with a stock starter and 24V. The ARD mag and leaky carbs are my kryptonite right now.

In spite of that I ordered an ebay 900 starter. It has 438 on the end bell also sm220 and .8KW fits 80-83 900,1000,1100. The part number is 31200-438-018.
The newer 900 starters are plentiful and cheap but I have no info that they fit the 750 mounts.
