« on: September 05, 2006, 11:06:37 AM »
My front brake keeps squeeling like a stuck pig on my CB550.  I have adjusted and adjusted it and nothingb is working.  Any tips would be great.

Lots of answers on the forum for this, pays the money etc. Hacksaw a groove  down the radial line of the pads , coat the back of the pucks with copper grease, use EBC pads, grit sand the existing pads. All work to some degree. Keep the puck and the pivots well lubricated with silicone grease and she will stop but never as good as a modern six pot caliper bike. Consider a dual disc conversion which will improve matters somewhat.

Me I've doe all the above and she she still squeals but the thing stops. Fellas in tin boxes hear me comiing so I guess thats a plus.

Ride safe

My brakes squeal like a pig as well.
I got EBC pads - still squeaked.
Cut a X into each pad - still squeaked.
Lubed everything as I was told - still squeaked.
Someone said the dual -discs dont squeak as bad - Squeak's now twice as bad

I have learned to live with it, as everything I have tried/done hasn't worked.
The thing stops - that's all that matters to me...

You are fighting a lost battle. I have been trying to stop mine from squeeling for 10 years now. Tried everything no result.

Mine squealed like a banshee, I pull the pucks, they already had the saw cuts, and put brake grease behind it.  It still squeaks if just lightly touched but not bad.  I can go down a hill and not sound like a freight coming into town :P

I use copper grease. It has greately reduced the squeel but it is still there.

Try removing, dissasembling  and greasing the
caliper hanger. It must pivot freely, if not you will
get constant rubbing and squeaking.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

don't forget to check the pin-calliperholder (the one with 2 small o-rings) if it has to much room,  the breaks will squek, every little thing will help it  >:( to squek more

Thats the first thing I noticed while I was riding in the rain was the lack of brake squeak.
It was nice  ;D

Mine used to squeek bad.

I pulled brake apart - and pulled off pad.  Using a light abrasive (scotch brite - or fine steel wool) I cleaned the outside of the pad; around the perimeter - and the corresponding surface inside the brake - where the pad sits.  Reassembled, and - cut the squeek down almost completely.

I think that light corrosion was keeping the pad from retracting with the caliper piston - and cleaning out the little bit of corrosion encouraged more freely moving brake pad.

If before i go for a ride take a scotch-brite pad and go over both rotors, the first few stops are as quiet as a new sportbike  ;D
As the stops increase, the squeaks come back >:(

I put a liberal amount of "Disk Brake Quiet" on the back of both pads.  It's a red-orange goop that sets up as a cushion.  Get it at auto-parts stores.

Zero squeal on both my 400F and my 750F.  The 750 especially would have dogs three miles away howling in pain, but now it's quiet.

On the 750 at least, I think the problem was the off-side pad.  The caliper and pad are there with metal-to-metal contact without any kind of buffer.  Perfect recipe for squealing.  Glopped that goo on there and no more squeal.

Mans inhumanity to man is to have squeeling brakes on a bike.
it has a couple of pluses.
One is that the driver of the vehicle definitely knows your behind him and that IS a plus.
two is to know that the brake pads are actually getting pressure onto the disc (sic)
Now to get rid of the the gahstly noise.
Polish the disc with Autosol a metal polish do not rub it off then drive the bike around the block using the brakes consistently in a  on off situation.
This will help de glaze the disc.
Take the disc off and get it "stoned" or resurfaced
Get a new disc rotor as the thickness of the old one may be passed the thickness minimun requirement.. I have even used a thin rubber backing (1MM) placed behind the master pad.
Also very important is to make sure that the caliper is adjusted  by the small horizontal screw behind the caliper, so as the two pads are gapped evenly on either side of the disc surface. This will ensure that the pads will contact and have even pressure on the disc. This will illiminate the one pad doing all the work and applying all the pressure and making the noise.
Good luck with the ear plugs.

I cleaned my pads and rotor, cut the groove into the pad and put a bevel on the edge of the pads. BARELY any squeak, after a while it does come back and I clean again. The pads are not new and I cant even remember what brand they were. I think a lot has to do with adjustment and the bleed on the brakes.

My new ones squealed like hell. I used to put Brakleen (CRC product) which quietened them down for a while. Then I was going to take my bike for a Warrant of Fitness test so sprayed the stuff on except I grabbed the wrong CRC can and sprayed CRC lubricant all over them ha ha ha...Sh*t I thought I was stuffed. So then I blew a whole lot of Brakleen over them and rode a few miles pulling the brakes off and on hard until I had burnt all the product off. Guess what, no squealing brakes anymore. Might be worth a try dude....

My CB750K4 brakes squealed in May, I put some high temp silicon grease behind each bad and squeaks all but dissappeared. By end of August still relatively squeak free with the odd squeak but nowhere near as bad as before. If you keep replacing the grease every few months should be trouble-free.

cheers
Andy

Guess I am lucky ;D, my CB550 brakes have never made a bit or noise.  Is it a problem with all the bikes or just the 750s
