motorcycling after back surgery
« on: January 20, 2014, 03:27:22 PM »
Hey guys

I'm sorry if this topic has already been covered.

I'm having back surgery this week, it's referred to as a lumbar fusion procedure.  I'm wondering if any of you have gone through this and mainly how does this affect your ability to ride.  I'll be healing up about the time warm weather gets here.  What has your experience been?

not looking forward to surgery...

Ron

Had 4 cervical fused in 2012.  Best thing I ever did.  I have as much mobility as before, no more pain.  That said, Good Luck, and recover fast,

I rode to my 6 week post fusion surgery appointment.....you know, so the doctor could officially clear me to ride again.  ;D

Lowest 3 vertebrae fused in Jan 2012 and just now beginning to feel pain again. Well worth it IMO.

Hi. I had 3 cervical neck fusions, and have a piece of metal with a hinge on it as prize. Had a lumbar 3-4 done in Oct. Going back to doctor for possibly another fusion in 1-2. One good thing is I never really had any pain from surgery. In my case, my bad back caused me to walk funny, and screwed up my leg that had recent knee replacement. So may be facing another knee surgery as well. The biggest thing to remember , don't rush it, take it easy and let it heal.

Good luck, Bob

Well how are you feeling after the operation GTO Ron?

It's been a week since surgery.  I'm sore as hell and the puny pain meds prescribed might as well be sugar pills.  The doctors here are so paranoid about over-prescribing narcotics that if you really need them: too bad for you.

The spine surgeon said I should be able to start riding again in three months.  I'll update the thread again in a month when I'm more comfortable.

best regards...
Ron

I feel your pain Ron. I'm 9 weeks post double discectomy and a triple nerve root foraminotomy. Back surgery can be very painful.

Hang in. Try to stay positive. The worst thing for me is dealing with how slow recovery has been.

You WILL be riding come spring and you WILL enjoy it more because you will be pain free.

Hi friends

I said I'd update after a month.   Two weeks after my spinal fusion my gall bladder went to hell.  Just had it removed and am feeling better about the hip and leg pain.  I try to walk a few miles a week, my wife is a good walker.  After reading your responses I am much more optimistic and looking forward to summer.  My concern is that I've lost a lot of strength in my legs and as we know the 750K is a top-heavy bike.

best regards too all who responded, you're the best

first back surgery in january 2000.  need another one, possibly 2, but no insurance at moment and not really sure i want them cutting my back open again. hard bumps are killer, and leg strength comes and goes ( cant ride the horses anymore because of this), really long
rides are brutal if i cant make a leg stretching stop along the way
will continue to ride until i either crash or can no longer walk on my own
