"Segway at your own risk" - (& preserve nature and always wear a helmet), they'll probably be ok.

Wouldn't want someone to crack their haid open and all that raw stupidity run out on the sidewalk?

How come you included me quoting, when noting I posted was quoted?   :o

I can't fathom any insurance company selling the manufacturer any type of liability coverage.

Tom

Why.? Segways and motorcycles can be insured, what makes you think they are so unsafe..?I read an article not long ago that said that if motorcycles had been invented recently they would be banned from using the roads.

Not the end user, the manufacturer can be held liable for selling an inherently unsafe product.

Just how long do you think it will be before some fool fly's over a speed bump and gets thrown from the uni-bike and does a full face plant? Lawyers love products like this.....

Tom

That already happens on motorcycles, scooters, segways and anything else with wheels, unicycle...? I'm not getting your point at all, any idiot can fall over..?  I assume you did learn to ride on 2 wheels at some time which included falling over or off..?, sue anyone..?

2 wheels is one thing, just imagine a lawyer arguing a case against a one wheel vehicle. It's  hard to imagine an insurance company issuing a policy to cover any unforeseen injury against this class of vehicle.

If it doesn't go more than 30 its considered a moped. You don't have to insure a moped. You don't have to even get an inspection sticker. Remember pocket bikes? These uni-bikes will end up like them. I bet therewill be more 12yo boys riding them than anyone else. Within a month of their release ssomeone will discover a simple hack so you can circuit bend the technology and double the posted top speed. Sales will rocket. There will be YouTube vibs galore.

What I would like to see with the bike is some cambor. Imagine if you could get that single tire to angle 5° on the axle to make a turn.? Turn on a dime. Would be a thrill for tearing up an urban obstacle course.

Ooo oooo how about a trials style bike? All torque and pops of acceleration.

I think I need to start my own uni-bike company.

Why.? Segways and motorcycles can be insured, what makes you think they are so unsafe..?I read an article not long ago that said that if motorcycles had been invented recently they would be banned from using the roads.

It's not necessarily about safety, but about whether it is useful.

By the very nature of its 10 mile range/10mph limit, this thing is being marketed as an alternative to walking, and thus need a bike lane or sidewalk.

Motorcycles drive in traffic lanes and follow the traffic laws. Very different.

Segways are also marketed as an alternative to walking, but they never really took off. NYC is arguably the U.S. city with the most heavy pedestrian traffic and you never see Segways. In fact, if some doof was barreling down the sidewalk on a Segway bumping into people or blowing his horn to get people out of is way, pedestrians would collectively pull him off the thing and kick his teeth in. I sense it'd be exactly the same with an electric unicycle.

I agree. Logistics, practicality and common sense have to come into play at some point. Common sense is not that common these days though so perhaps they will sell. The councils will widen the side walks to accomodate them because they are no longer wide enough now and everyone will pay for it.

The 10 mile range is perfect for inner city travel where it will most likely be used, New York is a fairly old city so i would imagine it was never laid out to suit these types of short range transport, on the other hand Brisbane has just specifically allowed the use of segways as "public transport" in the inner city area, there are already bikeways everywhere so there is really no problem, i suppose it depends on where you live and whether  the supporting infrastructure is there or not....

Bingo. By the time they're on sale at Pep Boys, there will be thousands of them "slightly used" for sale on craigslist.
