Hi, all,

Jason just stopped in and it appears Bronco Bike has NO fuel filter.  We pulled the petcock and there is a metal screen but no filter.  So we decided I needed to get those in-line fuel filters so I can check them easily.

Anyone know the exact part number (stampf??? brand..;.not sure on this brand, but Jason recommended this brand because Pet Boys may have it in stock.

Any ideas??

Linda

Well, a lot of people like to add the inline fuel filters.  I'm not one of them, as I think the screen in the stock fuel petcock is all you need.
Chunks and bits of debris that can make it through the stock filter screen will also flow though any fuel orifice in the carb.
I've had my 74 CB550 since 75 and I've never needed inline fuel filters in any of my bikes.

I've acquired bikes that have had these installed, hated that they were there and took them out.  This is because there is just barely enough room to fit into that short space between petcock and carbs on the CB550.  And, any flexibility that the tubing had is almost eliminated with the two filters you will need for your bike.  Further, it's not often easy to find a small inline filter that fits the stock metric tubing needed for the nipples on the petcock and carbs.

You might wish to drain and examine the contents of your carb bowls into a clean shallow pan (there's a drain plug on each one). If there are any bits larger than .4 mm, then you do have contamination issues that will plug up your slow/idle jets.  You will then need to track down the source of these bits and eliminate the source.

Happy hunting and good luck!

Linda, try MandP.com. Their in line filters are small and efficient and cost about $3. Postage on such a small item should be negligable.

Old Biker- just went there - Just did a quick search and cannot find a CB550 for 1974 - they have a cbx 550 but years are 1982-83... I'll take a closer look tonight.

Thanks for the info and I'll check it a bit closer and see if I can find something there.

linda,
the inline filters are readaly avaliable at most bike shops, they are usualy hanging on the wall behind the parts counter, just ask for the inline filter, you need 1/4" ones, which means that it fits nicely into a 1/4" fuel line. although i agree with two tired, i hate them too, but if you have an old tank that has a bit of rust in it... it is a good idea to have them. the carbs can only push so much of that crud through.
the problem i have with my 500, is that there is so much crud in the tank (from a failed cleaning with improper chemical) that the petcock gets cloged (the top inside where the fuel has to find its way through the really poorley designed little tunnels with several right angle turns... so... you might want to take it off, and make sure its clean, compressed air is the best way, along with some carb cleaner, but careful to limit the cleaner to the rubber parts.
good luck, i missed a vintage ride yesterday because of the same problem... bike cuts out after the gas in the bowles runs out...

Linda, the filter I referred to is not specific to a particular model. It is a push fit in the middle of the gas feed pipe. There is an MandP shop near me in Coventry UK.and if you have any problems getting what you want, then pm me your address and I'll get one and post it to you. regards John.

Linda, click on http://www.crc2onlinecatalog.com/Index_Main_Frame.htm and go to "Fuel System Parts" on the navigation bar on the left. Then, in the next screen, click on Fuel line and filters. There are pictures of many kinds of filters. I figured this might help for when you go to the bike shop, you'll know what you're looking for.

Hi Linda
When you go get your filters look for the see through type as it makes it easier to tell when it`s time to change them and you can keep an eye on fuel flow. Also make sure they are gasohol resistant if you have the mixed fuel like here in the midwest. When mounting them try to keep them as far away from the engine as possible due to the heat. Here`s a pic of the type I use on my bikes.

Thanks to all - I had the tank "acid washed" and got 2 in-line fuel filters that are quite cute!  Now I am hunting for the fuel line clips - as local honda shop did not have any in stock.

I feel good that I went ahead and had the gas tank cleaned out-as now I feel like the fuel should be clean at least TO the fuel filters.

Next I need to clean out the float bowls - but lasik surgery has set me back a bit.

I'll get some work done tomorrow - I'm looking for magnfying glass to help me see better.

And of course, weather is fabulous and all I hear are other bikes zooming off into the wind....makes me sad.
