Sources for 1975 550 engine cover gaskets
« on: February 27, 2014, 06:52:59 AM »
Have read several project posts about gasket quality issues such as missing gaskets, wrong shape, poor build quality etc.   At moment, I am only looking for the cover gaskets.  Not doing an engine tear down.  Just cleaning and polishing so need the gaskets for the alt cover, clutch cover, breather cover, head cover, etc

There seems to be some on ebay(unsure of supplier and quality) and spotty availability from the other on line venders.   Should I keep searching for the individual gaskets I need or just suck it up and buy a kit?

Either way, where did you get yours?

Bill - I'd go the route of buying a complete kit now, of good quality, and store the unused items for use later (perhaps if ever needed). Financially, it seems to be a near wash by the time you add up all the individuals. $55 roughly for the individuals and $70 for a complete top and bottom kit from DSS. These are listed as "Original Parts".

Vesrah makes a pretty decent quality kit. Although I would still go with an OEM Honda head gasket if I was replacing one again. If you buy the gaskets individually they will cost you way more than a whole kit.

Individual OEM gaskets will cost you more but will fit. You get what you pay for.

Except for the headgasket i haven't had a problem with fitment on any other gasket. you can end up paying a lot for nothing.

Yes you're right, Cometic has MLS head gaskets available now as well as Viton coated steel base gaskets. Then it only means buying those few individual items.
