Memories
« on: September 11, 2006, 12:51:56 AM »
As a "middle aged" Brit who has spent about 11 weeks on vacation in the US over the past 7 years and can remember lying in bed(woken up early afternoon after night shift) watching a CNN live newsfeed on UK TV, itself an unusual occurrence, 5 years ago today and thinking "I saw those towers from Newark International whilst changing flights". I can only say to you all, whom i consider friends, that the memories will linger but are outweighed by the good memories of the many friendly, and helpful "Yanks" i have met on this forum, and some of them met in person.

This was all brought back before today when watching the movie "Flight 93" which brought out some previously unknown, at least to me, things and as far as that goes I can only say that should I be ever in the same situation, god forbid, I have the courage and fortitude to act in a similar way to those on that flight.

All I, and my nephew(only 3 years younger than me) plus his daughter, said when asked by the Airlines if we still wished to fly to Miami in November 2001 was " No Bloody Rag Head is going to stop us!"

This, plus watching the launch of the ill fated shuttle in 2003 from a river bridge near Cocoa Beach makes me feel humble to say " I know some of those people who are/did suffer"

My regards and heartfelt sympathy to all of those who need it and to the rest of us there is an Old English saying

"Nil Carborundum Desperandum"

Which is usually, badly, translated as "Don't let the buggers get you down!"

Yours Bryan

Heres me at ground zero last week. As you can see, I'm not terribly happy.

I was on a plane to Richmond and in the air when everything happened.  I think we were one of the last planes in the air that day.  We ended up landing in Clevland, not knowing what the hell was happening.  As we got off the plane, police were rushing us out of the airport and I caught a glimpse of CNN on one of the tv's.  I couldn't believe what was happening, I guess I still thought it was some kind of accident.  Later on I wandered down to the Mariott where hundreds of strangers just stood silent in a hotel lobby watching the footage.  That's when I heard what happened to both towers, the Pentagon, and Flight 93.  It's still hard to accept that all those people are gone.

I was watching the Blue Angels practice at NAS Pensacola with maybe 100 other people. Everyone was excited about what was kind of a personal air show. The 2 soloists sat at the end of the runway for a long time then went back to the hangar. The 4 that were already up did a fly-by and landed. Everyone thought there was a mechanical failure until one of the workers came over and told us what had happened. We all just stared at him in disbelief for a minute then walked to our cars and turned on our radios. Nobody moved for, probably, 20 minutes. It was, and is, a very emotional time.

My heart goes out to all who lost a loved one.

I remember I was working at the old office / coporate america job when the #$%* went down.
I recall sitting in my backyard and not seeing or hearing a single plane overhead, Which was way off becasue I live less than 5mn from O'hare airport. It was a erie feeling I dont wish to have happen again..

I recall the same feeling. I don't live that close to any airports, but overflights between east cost and Chicago and Detroit being a Northwest hub, made air traffic, at altitude, pretty commonplace. I recall walking the dog late at night and absolute silence with the occasional and obvious military jet flying lower and faster than one might expect. Strange to say the least.

i was still in graduate school at the time - what i remember of that day was feeling really, really futile about my project relative to what was going on in the world - i tried to go in to studio, but couldn't muster the energy to do anything at all...my professor didn't mind, she came by the desk and i don't remember if there were any other people in the building or not - she let me leave early.
