Pretty slim I'd say.  Pedrosa and Hayden would have to have worse than their typical results in the last races.  If those guys DNF one race though.....

That was my thought. I guess if he is staying on bikes next year then he'll have a chance to get it back.

Having said that, Pedrosa took a 'tablespoon sized' chunk out of his knee on Friday and rode well yesterday, but I wonder how he will do through the healing process. And I sometimes wonder about Nicky Haydens consistency.

Should be interesting for the last few races.

Hayden is incredibly consistent, he's usually top 4 or 5.  He's having a good run this year, but he still hasn't made the jump and really beat Rossi or Caparossi head to head.  They were both riding hurt when he was able to stretch his points lead a little.  It would be great if he can win it, but it won't convince anyone he's the best rider on the grid.  The two Italians have had terrible luck with equipment problems and injuries this year.  Nicky would be fighting his teammate for 3rd in points if they had better luck this year.

Having said that, with four races left Rossi could win out and take it from him.  Pedrosa seems not of this planet.  Who rides with a gaping wound and busting out the stitches in their knee?  Holy crap he wants it bad.  Nicky is just one DNF or a couple of bad races from losing it to either of those guys.  Hayden's a great rider, but he's just not on par with Rossi (aka God) or even Caparossi.  He and Pedrosa are pretty evenly matched, but keep it mind it's only Pedrosa's first year on a big bike and he is Oompa Loompa sized.  Next year the bikes get smaller and Pedrosa will be hard to catch.

Yup.  They're trying to slow them down a little.

Har, har! Lap times will be pretty close once they sort out the bugs in the new engines. Like the 250's the 800's will be able to carry corner speed better.

latest reports on the testing of the new 800s shows them to be within a bee's tit of the times for the current bikes, with higher corner speeds as well, so the theory behind trying to slow them down has failed. Rossi has even said that he believes that "they will get faster lap times than the 990s once they get them sorted."
Capriossi tested at Brno after the MotoGP there and was just .3 of a second slower than his lap-record the previous day, and he had only done a handful of laps!! The V4 Ducati revs to 18600 and is producing 232hp!! Faaaaark!!

The displacement limit may backfire in terms of rider safety.  Right now the 990cc bikes are supposed to be pretty easy to ride with smooth low end power.  They're going to lose that smooth tractability as the engineers try to squeeze every HP they can from 800cc's.  I've read where we'll probably see a lot more crashing (highsides) as riders try to get on the gas with a peaky 200+hp engine...more like the old two stroke era.  Did anyone see the on-board footage of Pedrosa highsiding on Friday?  Little dude got some hangtime.

Saw that. Fortunately those guys have to wear appropriate gear so it isn't often that they cannot get up and walk away from a get-off.

Like yesterday in WSB race 1: Troy Bayliss lowsides, gets up, runs to the bike, picks it up and manages to finish 7th. If that had been us we would have been a red smear down the road, probably with a big headache!
