The way I understand it is that the air pressure at the float bowl and the air side of the carb need to be the same. Ram air will cause a minor air pressure increase at the air side of the car at speed. Without additional measures this will cause a lean condition. Not good.
Basically the same issue as with a blow through carb turbo setup.

luhojs...............That's also how I understand it. With our current set up, we have the option of keeping the OEM rear-facing inlet open, or taping it closed. We will have the carb-bowls vented to the air-box as a precaution.  We also have a secondary gas-tank vent to a tube ending inside of the frame-neck. Last year a lot of salt accumulated in the neck because the bottom of the lower tree was open. This year it will be 95% closed-off to prevent salt from getting to the breather tube. 

If all goes well ;) ;) ;)...........future plans include a fairing which would clean up the air and hopefully include a snorkel-intake to a large air-box. 

This is video of a racer's personal visit to the salt to bore test holes for info.........it was the 1st rainy day in over a week but no rain fell directly on the salt and no flooding was noted.........
Because it is doubtful to get a 9-mile or longer course, the TRIUMPH - CASTROL streamliner has cancelled their practice session.  http://www.bikeworld.co.uk/news/393-guy-martin-land-speed-record-attempt-called-off

The BMST needs 5 and 7-mile courses for all but the fastest streamliners to run. They will have people on the salt this coming weekend to survey the situation.

After months of configuring, searching, consulting, and doing a lot of comparisons with a Honda CBR600 F3 sitting a few yards outside of Dave's shop, we decided to keep it simple and added the above intake-ducts in an attempt to provide sufficient air to the carbs. We changed the velocity stacks to 54mm soft rubber units from an '80s Suzuki and the K&N filter now sits on the bench in favor of a flat screen sitting just below the stacks. The bottom of the box is empty. We removed the inner-plate from the upper box and used its outer edge to frame the screen. The majority of our decision is based on the need to flow un-obstructed air to the carbs when above 10,000 rpms.  The dyno-testing clearly showed a loss of performance when the 'restricter' plate was in the box.

When I am on the bike my knees are pressed to the tapered rear corner of the air-box and the box retains the top-mounts to the frame. An interesting side note; a standard K-box would fit inside of the F2-F3 box.  A few more refinements and fitting the front fender will wait until next week...............but we are getting close with a full 3-weeks to go. ;D
Are those ducts from an FT500? If so, they are a major restriction in the FT intake, apparently intended to silence intake noise more than improve performance. Leave the rear-facing inlet open... ;)

It rained for 10-minutes and has flooded the salt-flats..............but its shallow and has a good chance to evaporate in the next few days. We will have direct reports from Mike Cook Jr. (the Cook's Shootout Event) and BMST people on the ground over the next few days.  Mike had begun to drag the courses on Friday because all looked good for getting both the Mountain and the International courses ready at full lengths............until late in the day. The forecast is for a lot of sun-shine ;) ;) ;)

The latest official report is the BMST is ON :) :) :)

The existing water is expected to completely evaporate within another 9 days............leaving plenty of time to grade the required courses. However, the surveyors note that the salt has shifted, somewhat like a sandbar, to the western portion of the Bonneville area. It is likely that the course set-ups will be moved to the 'higher-salt' locations. We have 19-days until we begin to go for records.........I'll be ready ;D ;D ;D

Jerry...............slight change to the travel plan. Will be traveling I-80 and could meet you on I-80 sometime on Thursday.............or early AM on Friday. We still plan to leave Wendover Wednesday PM or early Thursday so you would get home on Thursday. Let me know.........but we have time to consider.

I fly back on Wednesday 8/26 from depositing the daughter at UK. I COULD head out Thursday provided I get caught up from being gone. You know, sort through mail, do my Quickbooks, run to the bank, mow the lawn, pay bills, take care of the cat, pack, get beer/liquor etc.

Where/when? I'm ~3 hours to Cheyenne. Estimated ETA's please. May as well start the party Thursday!  :)

I'll bail earlier Wednesday for the 700 mile drive home. I have a 5am wake up call Thursday for another 150 mile drive to work by 8:30am.

The 2015 BMST event has been CANCELLED. The event promoters could not find enough dry area on the salt-flats to assure two courses would be available. The existing long-course was being graded but any water movement on the salt-flats caused by wind or more rain would have damaged portions of it.

Disappointing?........YES :(............But I already have plans for next year ;)

In the next 12 months I hope to keep making improvements to the CBR. Two other events held in late September and early October may be able to run. Several organizations and the BLM are working together to help to improve the salt-flats for future events. 

Thank you for all of the support and attention my fellow sohc4 riders and racers have given to my effort :) :) :) :)

That's a real bummer.  I am getting a real appreciation lately for all it takes to put together a dedicated hipo cb750.  It's got to be frustrating that your plans were called off on account of things beyond your control.  It's a real shame the salt flats have become less consistent and reliable as it was in the past.  I sure hope you get good salt next year.

It's a long trek for you to make Maxton or Ohio I guess.  At least the surface is reliable...  there is something cool about the salt though, I get it.  It's on my bucket list. 8)

George............yeah...........its a bummer :(

This bit of GREAT news came from my wife, Carol.................'Don't wait to get ready for next year' ;D ;D ;D ;D

Wilmington, Ohio is tempting but running on concrete requires a complete front-end swap to add BRAKES ;)

The real bummer is that I planned to compete in one class this year and then switch bikes to see if I could increase my records in TWO classes with the Tiger Cub. The plan for next year was to run the CBR in 2 or more classes.............by adding a fairing..........and MAYBE, just maybe, switching from gasoline to FUEL ;D ;D  With those thoughts in mind, I'm currently thinking of investing in more DYNO-time.

Of course the long-term goal is to build something to compete in the 1000cc classes..............So I am watching Bill's progress with the 915-kit. I see that pistons to fit the F2 head are available from Dynoman........and my head and cam may like that sized piston ;D ;D ;D

Scottly................Not since I rode across that DUST BOWL in April of 1971 :D :D

They now have speed-trials events at the Mojave airport and at the an airfield near Denver............but none are as satisfying as BONNEVILLE ;)

One or two dyno-runs may have to satisfy me until next summer ;D ;D ;D................in between building 2 HONDA CL77s and completing my TRIUMPH T100C 8)

Thanks for the interest guys.............I have all of the parts and most of the paint and chrome is finished..........One of the CL77s will be for sale......to pay for more custom parts, a custom landspeed fairing, and maybe another CB750 motor-build............something approaching 1000cc's ...........Only 53 weeks to go ;)

The current vintage 1000cc NA class semi streamlined record is around 200mph set by a Triumph triple?  Is that what your aiming for?  Frankly I'm not sure I'd want to go 200mph on a cb750.  I might soil my shorts...
