Transmission Rebuild/Replace?
« on: March 29, 2014, 07:17:45 PM »
So I bought this '76 750a a few months ago. I had someone go through it last week and he said the trans was going bad and would need to be replaced or rebuilt soon (he also told me the bike was semi automatic and was missing a 1-5 gear shifter so Im not sure he knows what he's talking about) Anyway he told me that the labor would cost more than the bike is worth and that I should sale it for what I can get out of it. I REALLY don't want to do that, but I can't seem to find anyone around who here knows about these bikes or how to work on them. SO my question is has anyone ever rebuilt or replaced a trans themselves? Is it something a person with basic machanical skills should try to undertake?

Any info would be really helpful!
Thanks!
Blane

I can only think of two people on this forum that have rebuilt their engines/trannies:

Bill - as documented here:

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=61876.0

And jweeks - who has mentioned it in posts.

I don't know what you mean by basic mechanic skills - I've personally rebuilt auto engines - haven't rebuilt a bike engine yet (other than top end work) - and the automatic intimidates me some.

But - I have read about others that after cleaning their oil pickup screen - gained additional oil pressure that helped a marginal clutch.  That is an easy job - I'd try that if it were me.

It would be interesting to hear about the symptoms - others with greater knowledge and experience can likely help if we have more detail to start with.
1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

Shifter linkage is a pain as the factory manual doesn't help you put it back together correctly. Take pictures before and during disassembly. The transmission wears out the clutch packs first, then can wear out springs and bearings if run for many miles. The clutch packs are just like mini standard bike clutches. Fibers and steels stacked on top of each other. Two clutch packs in the Hondamatic, one for each gear. The low gear has 2 more fibers than the high gear pack has. I'm using Honda Civic car fibers and steels from the similar era as they interchange and are far cheaper than NOS Hondamatic ones. The first symptoms are usually slippage between gears or the revs climbing without matching motion when you start off. The fibers wear out/wear off of the backings and contaminate the oil with the loose fibers from the clutch packs. If you're in there, replace both. Low gear usually goes first. Nothing fancy or special in replacing them. Follow the manual for shaft rotation/placement into the case halves to put it back together correctly. Some carefully placed sealant for the case halves and you're well on your way to getting it back together. Checking the cam chain and tensioner is also worth doing when the motor is split. If you're even thinking about doing this, get the gasket set from Jim F. Everything you'll need will be there for a normal motor. There aren't too many gasket sets available any more.

Mine must have had a PO that started in "high" all the time, because that's the pack that quit on mine. Pulled the oil pan off and there was a bunch of destroyed clutch crap in there. Got involved with other stuff and haven't finished it yet. Hope to son, and I'll try to post some pics too.

Oh no Mr. Bill ! Sorry to hear, it's damn sure different in there. But as Jon said, take pics and watch out for small parts. Jim F. Gasket kit a must. Seals can / have to be reused sometime. Good luck, wish it it didn't cost so much to ship. Kandrtech, did you ever get the info you wanted on stock pistons? Bill
