This past week, I successfully made the conversion from the stock bearings to the all balls roller bearings. I will post those pics and process in my build thread over the weekend, but thanks to the many posts here, it was an easy install. The small shim gave the proper stack height for the lower bearing install and a bit of time in the freezer for the races and triple tree finished the rest in no time.
I have one problem that I just can't understand from the dozens of pages posted on this conversion. Bike is 75 CB550. I am planning to use the stock headlamp mounting set up. Many forum members report a gap when these headlamp parts are installed on the forks with the all balls conversion. Also, the few instructions from all balls shows a picture of modifications to the retainer nut to widen the diameter and reduce the height of the little tabs on underside. Here is the pic of mine. Sorry for the blur. Screw driver is pointing to the area that all balls says to machine.
So my question is...If you had this gap issue, how did you solve it? Some members have eliminated the upper dust seal, others have installed shims for the headlamp brackets and others have somehow modified this nut. Regrettably, I have no precision machine equipment. So other than grinding these off, I am limited. I prefer to mod the nut as I think this will be cleanest look, but I can't understand the specifics of what to do and how.
Thanks
