New to Honda
« on: April 03, 2014, 03:15:40 PM »
Howdy Gents,

Recently picked up a '78 CB750.  Second bike coming from an '01 Triumph Bonneville.  The 750 needs some work, but I'm looking forward to getting into it as soon as I can recover from my back surgery.  Looking for some information on how to fix the tank - can you guys point me to the correct forum?

Seth

I was trying to follow the rules and join the member gallery, but it seems the page was dead.  I'll post a picture up if it lets me as it sat when I bought the bike.  It's not currently running, but was 2 years ago before the PO put it in storage and started to cafe it out.

Immediate problem, aside from it not running, is that the PO tried to seal the tank and it's all flaky.  Need some insight on how to clean the flaky sealer?

Welcome.   Do you know what brand sealer was used on the tank? You'll need to use a solvent to remove it and if necessary, repost it properly.  I recommend the Caswell product, available on Amazon.
You will most likely need to clean/rebuild your carbs.

I wish I knew.  I know that it's white, if that helps?  What sort of solvent do you recommend for cleaning the failed sealer?  Just pour in, let sit, swish around and pour out?

The carbs were cleaned and adjusted (according to the PO) before he let the bike sit and attempted to seal the tank.  No fuel has seen the tank since the sealer.  Going to pull the carbies out anyway and go over everything before startup, but crossing my fingers that it's simple.  4 carbs scare me a little bit, haha.

MEK should do the trick, do more research first. Start a new thread specifically for the tank issue and include a pic of the inside.

Awesome, thanks. Where do I start the thread though, I can't seem to figure out which it should actually go in.
