How come a country grants itself the right to use the name of the whole continent?

In British usage, Europe sometimes contrasts with England (WTF?)

I think  it has to do with having the big stick Raul     I have noticed over the years that many species of birds described in the Ornithology Field Guides have mysteriously had their names changed from 'Common" *** to 'American" *** .
 
Not a problem, Spain had their day too ....     

And then you wonder why people abroad think the US is arrogant...
