Cylinder #2 not firing at Idle.
« on: April 14, 2014, 10:08:43 am »
Hey guys,

I finally fixed the carb leak on carb one. My last problem now is cylinder 2 not firing at idle. She will only fire once i open the throttle. I have taken the carbs aparts to pieces and i have reassembled them back together after cleaning them. AFAIK, carb #2 is using all the stock parts (cleaned and reused),,

This is what I have done.

1/ cleaned carbs
2/ timing chain
3/ points
4/ checked for spark
5/ checked plugs after a ride and they were very good no black or white. but a nice bronze
6/ i played with the air screw (lean/rich mixture)
7/ synched the carbs

What am i missing? Could it be the idle jet is bad?

Could be idle/pilot jet or circuit, fuel height in the carb bowls, or low compression in the cylinder.

My first thought was verdegris, particularly due to the age and unknown storage condition of the machine in the picture.

Something acidic in the fuel leaching and converting the copper out of the brass alloy carb components.  See any pitting or metal loss in those components?  Has the bike/carbs stored gasahol for a longer time period than 3 months?

Another thought...
Some gas companies used to add dye to their gas.
In aviation, green tint meant 100/130 octane gas.  I haven't seen that is quite some time, though.

Had same thing goin on last
Week on a 76f I was working on.  I started bike turned off fuel and let it run out of gas. 1 carb was still full. Did that couple times. Pulled idle jet and it was clogged again. Blew it out and then ran fine. Changed inline filter
