testing speedo and tach?
« on: April 14, 2014, 12:21:50 pm »
Can I test spin the tach/speedo with the opposite cable end chucked in a variable speed drill or die grinder?if so, clockwise, ie same direction as the dial wants to turn?

Thanks for your consideration and help!

I made a tool to do this i cut an old speedo cable about 8" long on the outer casing and 10" long on the drive cable. Screw it into the gauge and chuck the drive cable into a drill. and spin away, although my dewalt cordless drill will only do about 35mph or 1800 rpm. a dremel might work too but i havent tried in fear of over spinning the gauges

I've done the same except I used the inner cable only. It's been very handy testing old clocks.

Your thread title says "testing".  Test at various tilt angles too.

These old gauges have bronze plain bearings inside and they wear differently on top and bottom.  I had one speedometer that would freeze in various positions on the bike but seemed to work fine with a drill.  Only by tilting the gauge the same as its mounted position was I able to reproduce the problem.

I've always used a short outer cable plus short inner.
