Just saying hello
« on: September 14, 2006, 01:15:29 PM »
Hello all:
I have been lurking around the tech forum for a while now, and am amazed at the amount of information here! Today for the first time I looked at the "Open Forum" section and saw the sticky for newbies, so I thought I'd better introduce myself.

I've been wrenching as a hobby since I was a little tyke, my dad's hobby was restoring antique cars.  I caught the disease as well, most of my friends have at one time or another tried an "intervention" to send me to the Henry Ford Clinic. ;D  I started riding motorcycles in college with a '70 CB175 as my trainer, and soon moved on to a '82 CB650SC.  I did my own maintenance but never really got into restoring bikes.  I've built and rebuilt a number of antique cars, hot rods, and race cars over the years, but just recently got interested in restoring old bikes. I have a '77 CB750F2, a '70 CB450K3, and a '71 CB450K4.  The 750 is in my barn awaiting restoration, the 450 K3 is in the midst of one (torn down to engine and frame, and tonight the engine will be dismounted,) and I bought the 450 K4 as a parts bike off of eBay in case I needed parts for the K3. However, after tearing down the K3 and examining the K4, I probably will end up restoring both of them, then my wife and I will have his-n-hers bikes.  I plan to save the 750 restore for last, after I have gained a little more experience with bike restoration.  By then my son will be old enough to ride his own bike, and I will probably pass on of the 450s on to him.

I have also joined the 2 CB450 DOHC sites, but they have limited activity compared to this forum, and I enjoy reading the technical posts even though I'm not actually doing anything with my SOHC4 right now (I'm told this is another symptom of my sickness.) ;)  Hopefully I can occasionally contribute suggestions from my experiences with old cars that will be of some use.

Matt

Thanks, guys, I feel right at home with so many others that obviously have the same affliction!  I'm not all that brand loyal to Ford's either, that's just the oldest vehicle I own (a 1919 Frontenac Ford racecar.)  I also have 3 other fords, 4 Chevys, 2 Pontiacs, 3 Hondas, and a Yamaha.  I'm lucky in that I found a wife that has the same interests in old cars, hot rods, motorcycles, and racing.  She also enjoys working in the garage with me.  As a matter of fact, she's as good a welder with the MIG as I am!

Yes, I certainly do feel like a lucky man.  Actually, my wife is better at putting tools away in their proper place than I am!  As a matter of fact, she just mentioned that she thinks I need another set of roll-away tool boxes for my birthday so my tools will be eaiser to find, and she can seperate the metric tools from the standard ones (not trying to rub it in!)  As far as the size of my garage, I only have a 2 car garage to work in at home, but I also have 2 large barns for storage.  I also helped my best friend complete a 40X60 shop last year that is climate controlled, so a lot of work on the cars takes place there.
