Don wellington boots and stand on a rubber mat. I think . . .

Sounds like good progress.

Replaced the coil, had one on the shelf.   Have 5 spare pet cocks, none were the right type.

Have had bad luck rebuilding petcocks in the past, ordered a new one from Partzilla, only $38.

Rolled it out of the garage, mounted the tank with the leaking petcock and starter her up.  It's amazing how much better four cylinder bikes with spark on all cylinders!

After a couple minutes of warm up, she idled on her own...progress.
Let I proceeded to blow out the crud in the exhaust, that's rather fun.
The engine smoked a little from the head but stopped after a few minutes.

Did a trans check while on the center stand, shifts fine. While in gear, tested rear brake, wheel stopped but motor kept running...WTF? Oh know, chutch not so good after all?  That has always concerned me about this 500, since it came with that case cover off. A quick clutch adjust and all is fine. I only drove it a very short distance since I have no front brake and my driveway is rather steep.

As she sits now...

Looking good Steve, I like the look of the little 500's, one with a 650 engine would be a fun little bike...

Just saw one of those swaps a couple of days ago.  The motor has a fair bit more grunt.

Stev-o -- that paint looks even better in the sunlight.  Psychedelic in GOOD way!

Thanks guys.

Pulled the caliper, gave it good cleaning and installed a new seal. Re-installed and I have front brakes now.

Just went for a quick ride around the block, it is back on the road!

Still have a few things to do including getting a new petcock to stop that pesky leak.
And a member here donated a rear grab rail, should have that in a few days [thanks Matt].

It's been a fun bike to work on, much easier since I'm not polishing or painting every part that comes off.  Not sure if I'll keep it, but won't be giving it away.

I've been neglecting my Z1, havent been out on it in two weeks.

Stev-o I somehow managed to miss this post until now! I like the fact you're keeping the "patina"... of course it might look good with some polished covers and maybe a spritz or two of paint and...   ;D ;D

I dig the integrity of the bike as it is and support your decision to keep it "natural". Cool beans, man! And you've finished it up before mine, dammit!

Great job!

Went for a nice ride on the Patina Bike this morning, I've put nearly 100 trouble-free miles on it. It's a fun little "putt putt" bike, nowhere near the performance of my 550 though.  And not as quick as my RD350 either, but still fun to ride.  This one is done and may be time to go.

Found a nice, new road new my home today...

And down by the river....

Yeah, the lake is still 30 feet below normal even though it rained all last weekend.  Still plenty of water, Lake Travis is 60 miles long and my boat is ready in its slip.

Hey Stevo!  Cool little bike.  I made the mistake of taking my 16yr old son with me while I was digging for 750 parts today.  ( my son rode a recently revived CL350) The guy has a barn full of old Hondas...my son spotted a ratty 550 super sport in all the bikes.....Dad? can I borrow $500? I have created a monster.

Thanks Ed, it was a fun little project getting it back on the road.

It has been moved to it's next owner, a young geologist as his first real bike [he had scooters].

Next up it a Fugley 550F that I found out in the Nevada desert, shipper picked it up a couple days ago. Stay tuned....
