I built a large cabinet out of plywood  to handle frames and small stuff, then the pandemic hit. Never used it as a cabinet, but the new chickens were happy. Last fall a young family up the road a piece  wanted to raise chickens.... well, I had my fill of free range chickens , torn up gardens, gotta watch where you walk, gotta let em out in the morning , gotta get them closed up for the night and trying to find them to save them from the hawks. They hide  pretty good  and are harder to find  than one might think.... anyways, that young family took it all and I was happy.
Didn't solve my sand blasting issues but it did solve the chicken issue.

I've seen goats in  action. Seen them chew off a vinyl roof off a Plymouth , eat the seats right out of a Ford Fairlane,  and eat everything in a yard that wasn't a weed and leave the grass high. They might stand on your cars hood in the morning and eat the seat off your motorcycle or your favorite pair of sneakers in the afternoon, and can't forget they headbutt your kids when you least expect it while you feed them in the evening.
Just darling creatures they are. I'm sure that's why there is always mutton on a menu in Europe.

Got the paint off the 76 550 frame with a soft wire brush wheel on a grinder, then backed it up with the sand blaster for the hard to get nooks and crannies . A blow and a decent wipe down and gave it 3 coats of gloss black  let it set for 2 days .
Dropped in my last on the shelf rebuilt 550, the original  engine will be rebuilt when I get time and that will be the new spare engine. Roller bearings on the steering , new brakes , any thing that had grease in it got cleaned out and received fresh grease, new cables, fresh carbs, cleaned the wiring harness up  and plugged them all in the headlight, cleaned up original wheels for now they'll do. need to order new ignition switch, grips , and a few other little items. The bike came with a severely rusted crash bar but I  had a really decent one in the rafters that I actually put on, and I think I kinda like it for a change. Hope to get the carbs in sync this weekend.

Laughing about the goats.

Sounds like a good and productive day!
I need to get one of my extra motors rebuilt. Or make time and space to do so.

Saw video once of a kid who put on a football helmet I believe and he was head butting with a baby goat about his size. Crazy thing to watch. Guess the kid grew up around the goats and felt he could dish as good as he got...
Either that or he has a few too many blows to the head...

Yes it's looking a bit healthier . Have to put a battery in it and time the spark, sync the carbs, a chain and a few other little things and it's time for a ride.
#2 and 3 pipes are in okay shape  , 1 and 4 could use replacement .... like every one else's.  I think I know a guy who welds stainless , I'm gonna try to bend some stainless sheet stock up for a "patch " for those 2 and see if it works . I just can't see cutting # 2 and 3  pipes so I can put on an old aftermarket set of 2 into 1 mufflers on it... they are just too good to waste.  And you know the day that I cut them, #1 and 4 pipes will show up somehow.
Painted in a black area on the tank and pinstriped it today, looks much better now. pics will be coming .

A few years ago I liked plain single colored tanks with no Honda emblems on them, now  for some reason I find the traditional tank look more appealing now.

Thank you. It's a Nissan color, it's not the old Honda color, but it is Japanese,  seemed close enough for me and I like it.
Got a bit more fooling around to do to it and hope to give 'er it's first ride in a long time soon.

Guess who waisted an entire day on wiring a 76 550.
haven t been able to get power to the brown lines on the fuses... the red has power in and out.  browns have nothing in or out but does ohm back to the ignition switch.
I ohm d the new switch in all positions and it is working properly. Even hot wired an old set of wires BL+R and the 2 browns together didn't make any difference.
All the wires in the headlight have mates , with the exception of the lone brown wire ( like usual)and an empty female 4 pack in black, the only spare male wire is brown and white  with a full 4 pack of brown and white, no place to put it .
I wonder why the yellow 1/2coated sleeve on the female brown and red is 1/2 yellow  like it's some kind of special.  There is a male brown and red that is plugged into it.....  I wondered if this could be the place for a jumper wire that would be able to light up the other 2 brown fuses  since I have seen no way to light em up on the back end of the harness. so I figured that there must be a jump wire in that special yellow jacketed  wire . I did find  a jump wire in the light bucket when it was being dismantled , don't remember if it was hooked up to anything. I usually find horrifying things that have happened in a light bucket, so I didn't think much about it.
I have blinkers, horn, and horn beeper , and one  orange light on the triple.  I installed new throttle side controls ,but kept the left side as the operated easily.
No action w starter button  changed solenoid no change , suspicious looking wiring on rectifier...changed that out just in case.
I looked up the addendum wire diagram here for the 76  but it isn't a match for the colors I have on the bike . I do have a 76-77 new harness that doesn't look right either. my manual is for earlier 550 and has little info on upgrades.
I must be close but was unable to get there... anyone got an idea what I missed?

So today I pulled the left bar controls out of the bars since they weren 't new, as luck would have it ,I had a new one hanging on a nail in the barn. looked the same from the outside should do the same thing as the old one. It had a bunch of extra wires in the unit. the original had 7 , had a used one with 10 but the new one had 11 and have of them were unitized for plug and play, more like the later models....WTF.  Went with the second choice , the used one with only 10 wires in it  and 2 on the lever. It was alot thicker than the original one ,stuffed it in the hole with  1 extra wire and tape...got it half ways there before the tape let loose from the WD that I sprayed inside the bars for lube. I usually use nylon line  but it was on the jobsite.  I used some stiff wire with no jacket the next time and just wrapped it in a choker spiral ...not easy, not fast but got the job done.
Unplugged everything in the light bucket for the 3rd time , just in case I may have screwed up the 1st two times.  Everything went together alright til near the end  but there was no brown/red wire male  for the female with a yellow jacket , this time but there was a male brown blue with small yellow jacket, a female brown blue with no yellow jacket , a black w yellow stripe male, a 4 pack of female black , and  the jumper wire that I pulled out of the trash.
What to do? Right?  Ended up plugging the m and f brown and blue together,  the jumper from the  4 way black female to the brown and red which lit up the second circut like I wanted . The extra black and yellow wire lit the headlight which was great , now I know that works....but the on off light switch on the other bar was set in off position...sounds like I fed it power through the back door....  ran outta time to play.....unplugged that black and yellow wire from the black 4 pack, forgot to test the light in the ON position. Unplugged the battery so I don't burn the place down and left for dinner. I'm closer today than yesterday, maybe  get it right tomorrow.

Had just enough time to check the wiring diagrams for the left switch that I already wired in. It seems that the switch came from a 77 750 not a 550 , the 77 wiring diagram shows that the unknown black and yellow male wire from the switch goes into the light bucket and hooks up to the only brown wire  that we usually leave hanging alone ( for parking lights) we don't use parking lights this side of the pond ,so I think that I'll put it in an insulated jacket ...can 't find a new 76 left side switch for a 550 any place ,  seems they go up to 75 , then start  again at 77. So if I check the right hand switch  and everything works, the fuses don t blow, and it doesn t melt the harness , I 'll consider it a success .
Then time the spark....but then there is a new issue. Maybe someone here has  run into this: NGK no longer makes spark plug caps anymore, ordered them from Parts Unlimited, kept re ordering them but they never come,  the word from  Parts Unlimited is   " they have no alternative for any machine that have used NGK  spark plug caps.  and their spark plugs have been pirated for years so it's been hard to say if an NGK plug is really an NGK plug or a knock off. I have found the same issue with other shops that used to sell them. Has anyone found a good  alternative?

Takes a good bit of hunting around to find NOS? NGK spark plug caps made for your application:I have also ordered by Honda part# to get some NOS NGK spark plug resistor caps with the correct specs.

Thanks ... I forgot about going through Honda parts , Those ngk caps were always something I could get from anywhere before.
Stole some time and put new points and condensers  in the rebuilt 550 engine and timed the spark. Happy about that.
Plugged in an old headlight to see if it works properly after reading that the black and yellow wire gets fed by a black wire to feed the lamp alone, must have been a original light with a rusty or dirty filament , didn't burn out wires but did smoke the inside of the glass. The wires didn't get hot so I'll get a new one and see how it works. If it doesn't work I'll splice some bullets into that plug and play left hand control from 4 into 1 that I found hanging on a nail in the shop , rewire the bars and see if that makes things all better. It's all fun and games but few things give me as much pleasure as spending time working on a Honda.

So I banked a little time from the job where I could escape to the shop and give that 76 it's first fire and sinc the carbs today.
I cleaned up that old wiring harness a week or so ago ,had a moment or two of no power to the fuses...checked the ignition switch, worked fine . unhooked all the wires and rewired everything again  and viola everything but the horn and the starter worked.  Used a screwdriver across the solenoid, no go , so I ordered one .  Put that in today first thing  and  found I'm back to no power to the fuses or anyplace else. Will I waste another day tracing wires ? Will I open up that harness ,do the repairs, because it's a 50 year old harness?
I had a new 1975 harness on the wall, just in case. And now is the case, no more dicking around with 50 year old wires with a ghost, I'll use the new 75 harness. The light switch that has had my goat last week because I couldn't find a 1976 switch for replacement anywhere,  but did find a new 1975 switch on a nail in the barn, then decided to use a used 750 switch with an extra black and  yellow wire that I could feed from an open black female wire instead.
The plan is to fish the wires back out of the handlebars and use the new 75 replacement switch with the new 75 harness . I'm thinking the only difference that I have seen is no clutch safety thing wires that  people over ride anyways. Probably should have done that in the first place, it just seemed too easy.
