Front Pegs for relaxing?
« on: May 12, 2014, 05:11:45 PM »
Has anyone found a solution to mount (just for a trip, so needs to be easy and cheap) some front position pegs for some stretching on long trips (besides a crash bar)?

Frequently clamp on pegs end up being over tightened and end up crushing the tube, or at least putting a flat spot in it.

I'd suggest making a bracket that mounts off the front motor hangar bolts, using different engine mount bolts, that can be installed and removed as you desire. It would not take long to swap them on/off, and you'd protect the integrity of the frame. Some widely availbe foot pegs in the same style as your foot pedals, and a bit of steel plate, and they will look custom and well thought out.

I found some aluminum pegs that mount off the front motor mount bolts. Ugly but could do the job. I was using them on my chop but it became a drag bike. There are clamp on ones that fit the frame tube too.

pics and links would help!

Fabrication sounds like tons of fun, but I already have many projects. This is for a trip, so just something to mount up for occasional use. Ugly is fine. Comfortable is key! Doing a 8 hour ride to Reno, NV in September

Get yourself some EMGO folding footpegs, steel allthread and nuts with lockwashers and run it through the front motor mounts that use the nuts that get trapped by the block

You just gotta cut some all thread to length. Should cost like 40$ all in and be quick to swap on/off

It seems the re-mounted pegs at the motor hangar bolts is a commonly recommended idea. The only reason I propose you make some brackets is the geometry of your posture with pegs in the mounting holes may not be comfy, or stable. It all depends on your bars and seat. Hence, use those holes, but maybe a bracket to allow some offset (down, back toward you, etc) might be needed. Just make sure if you do use a bracket, mount it with at least 2 bolts to aide in stability.

This is the best picture I have for now, can get some better ones tonight:

The peg stem is mounted on a "banana" plate at the front motor mount, and actually replaces the plate on the right side. Found these on Ebay for $15 a few years ago, then kicked myself for letting them sit for a couple years before installing them. The pegs fold up and out of the way when not in use. Sure is nice on longer rides to be able to stretch the legs out without having to stand up (or stop and get off). I'll always have a set on my CB750 from now on.

I didn't find them relaxing at all. Brings more weight on your bottom and... you are less in control of your bike.

I didn't find them relaxing at all.

I don't ever find much of an opportunity to "relax" when riding, got to be on my toes!  ;) The main benefit of the forward pegs for me is the ability to straighten out my old knees once in a while.

Brings more weight on your bottom

Agreed. Recently rode a friends brand-new Honda Shadow with forward controls. Painfully learned that I will never have a motorcycle with forward pegs only, since there is no way to relieve the weight from your backside. I like having the pegs under me so I can "get up on the pegs" when the pavement gets rough. Low back injuries are cumulative, and I've accumulated a couple of minor strains.

... you are less in control of your bike.

They do require practice, just like anything else. I typically move my feet back to control pegs when in heavy traffic, approaching an intersection, etc... I have occasionally found myself reaching a toe out for the shifter and/or brake with my feet on the forward pegs.

I just need more practice!  8)

Those after market clamp on the downtubes would be the quickest and easiest for occasional use. If mounted carefully with a wrap of old rubber inner tube or other material for a scratch guard and not cranked down overly tight to bend the tubes. I have a little pile of those around off of bikes I have bought.
I ride sometimes with my feet on the passenger pegs just to get a little break.

I'm interested. It's hard to see how exactly they mount though…are they mounting to the engine mounts?

If I remember correctly, it uses U bolts just above the engine mount. I'm headed over to where the bike is in a few hours. I'll take some closer photos of the mounting setup.

Yeah, U Bolts on the downtubes. IIRC from my parts dept days, the CB500 Highway Pegs won't work on a CB750 witout modification. Downtube spacing and overall width is different.

Another option is just buying a damned crash bar. No modification, and it will for-sure put the pegs in a really good position....

It's also about the same cost. Maybe I can post a "wanted" add.
