Stopped by my painter and showed him what I want done.  Looks like paint will be $450.  Told the wife and for some strange reason she didn't freak out like she did when I had the other bike painted.  Hmm...I am sensing a trend when it comes to stuff for her bike.  I need to finalize a few things and get one item before I drop the parts off.  This is the place I use for all of my paint work.  I know the shop foreman and the owner of the place is a retired Navy Chief.  http://outlawsrc.com/index.htm

I also received the seat cover from the UK.  It looks pretty good.  I am going to swing by one of the local upholstery shops tomorrow and see if I can get some foam and see what they would charge to do the work.  If it isn't too bad I may just let them do it.

I've had an upholstery place specifically install closed cell foam and it was a Big improvement in support and comfort on long rides.

Dropped off the seat today at a local auto upholstery shop.  For those familiar with the area they are a multi year "Best of the Beach" winner so I should have no issues with their quality of work.  $100 to put the new cover on and replacing the worn out foam with multiple layers of varying densities of foam for comfort.  It was a bit more than I was hoping to spend, but at the end of the day I (the wife) will be happy with it.

The new shocks arrived today.  I bought a set of shocks from TEC bike parts.  They are relatively cheap shocks, but based on some reviews they are good for just cruising around town.  Since the wife isn't going to be doing any serious carving of the roads these should work just fine for how she will be riding.  I had read that the top mount on them weren't as wide as the OEM.  Sure enough mine were narrow.  OEM is 22mm and the TEC's are 18mm.  So off to Ace to pick up some washers.  When I went to mount the bottom of the shocks I noticed that the clevice was a fair bit wider than the mount.  OEM is 19mm and the TEC's were 22mm.  Luckily I had four small washers in my parts bin that fit the bill perfectly.  Getting the washers in and aligned proved to be little bit of a pain, but they are on and look pretty darn good.

Well crap.  I haven't even ridden the bike yet and I already have an oil leak.  I was working on something in the garage last night and dropped a bolt that went under the bike.  When I went to get it I saw a drop of oil coming from the bottom of the clutch cover.  Took it off and it appears the shift shaft seal is leaking.  So I guess I will have to replace that.

I understand that the right side cover has to come off and basically the clutch basket has to be removed to pull the shaft out to replace the seal.  However, I have thought about screwing in two long screws into the face of the seal and seeing if I can wiggle it out.  Then I should be able to slide the new seal over the shift shaft and into the engine case.

Harsh,
There's a good deal on ebay right now for that shift shaft seal from Partzilla in Albany,GA. I just today ordered 2 of them in fact(one for a spare just in case for later)and it's better to have that one new considering it's at the bottom case and can cause the engine to run low on oil... Just look up part# 91206-286-013 and you'll have a lot of choices.
I've replaced them w/ a drill and 2 long sheet metal/drywall screws;if you do it that way you must be very careful the drill doesn't 'walk' around on the surface of the rubber before it bites into the steel of the seal underneath.I've used a long aggressive cobalt type drill to go in very carefully and as straight as you can.

I already have two new oem seals.  Did you drain the oil before you removed the seal?  Nice to know that my thought to pull the seal without removing all of the stuff should work.

Oh,ok.I didn't know you had them yet.
I just leaned the bike over onto the right footpeg w/ the help of a large block of wood to support it Harsh, that allowed the oil to stay away from the 'seal job'.

Went to pick up the seat yesterday and when I inspected it I was not happy.  In one of the front corners they trimmed the excess material waaaaay too short and it was literally hanging on by a thread.  The first time anyone sat on the seat it would have ripped through.  Needless to say I didn't take the seat home with me.  The gal working the counter said that she will show it to the owner and see what they can come up with.  She mentioned sewing in a patch to provide more material, but in order to do so you would definitely see the stitching on the outside of the seat which I probably won't be happy with.  The original seat has a plastic piece sewn into the edge to prevent the tines from ripping through.  Why they didn't re-use that or do the same thing is beyond me.

Needless to say if I don't like whatever suggestions they come up with or the outcome they will be purchasing a new cover.  Why does it seem that the closer I get to finishing more crap seems to be going wrong?

Took the cover off so I could change the leaking seal.  Once I wiped the oil off the shift shaft seal I noticed it wasn't the culprit of the leak. It is the primary drive seal that is leaking and not the shift shaft seal.  So I guess I will have to order one of those since I don't have a spare.

Harsh,
That one can be a 'bear' to change w/o spitting the cases.. but can be done w/ much gentle persuasion and patience.

That sleeve should come off, try to polish with fine steel wool. If there are deep groves maybe flip it over.

Stopped by the upholstery shop this morning.  They are hell bent on sewing in a patch.  I finally agreed, but if there was any visible stitching on the outside or if it doesn't hold they will be replacing it.

On a good note I dropped the parts off with the painter yesterday.

They called this afternoon and much to my surprise they were able to add a patch and get the stitching to not show.

I installed the strap and chrome trim when I got home.  I didn't want to cut the vinyl for the screws that attached the strap to the seat and buckle.  I was worried that over time the vinyl might tear.  So I heated up the tip of a screw and pressed it into the vinyl where I wanted the holes to be.  This melted vinyl while making the hole.  Now the hole is sealed so it shouldn't rip out.

Thanks.  I really like how it turned out.

The new counter shaft seal came in today so I installed it.  But first I had to get the old one out.  I didn't want to pull the engine and split the cases to remove the counter shaft so I engineered a solution.  I carefully drilled a few holes through the old seal with a 1/16" drill bit.  I then screwed in a couple self tapping screws.  I tried the wiggle jiggle method to remove the seal, but got no where.  So I grabbed a screw my slip joint pliers and tapped on it with a set of pliers.  That got the seal to start to slide out.  I moved onto the other screws and worked the seal completely out.

I took a good look at the shaft and block and didn't see anything, but decided to rub some 0000 steel wool over the surface areas anyway.  Coated the new seal with a little oil and tapped it into place with a piece of pvc pipe.  I forgot to get a picture of the setup while everything was in the bike, but hopefully this will suffice.  Just picture the countershaft coming out of the middle of the seal and the pvc pipe as the engine case.  Hopefully this will fix the leak.  I took a good look at the seal after I had it removed and there was a tiny cut on the inside so I presume I did that when I was installing everything.

Harsh,
Somehow I missed when you posted the seat photos before.  That seat looks beautiful.  I really dig the brown color on that.  Your wife is going to love this bike.

Alrighty...here are the painted parts.

The cream section came out a little whiter than I wanted, but it will work just fine.
