help with carbs
« on: June 01, 2014, 07:20:30 PM »
My 2nd carb was pissing gas out the bottom and with all my reading it has something to do with the float. I took the carbs off bike and checked all the floats and needles. The 2nd one was stuck open and fixed it! My question is what else should I be cleaning up on these carbs? I have a 77' cb750 and I cannot find anything that talks about these specific carbs not even the manual posted here. Here is a pic, i think haha!

ok, upon more research the big jet is the main one and the small one to the side is the slow jet, correct? When I take these out and clean them should they be put back in screwed all the way down or should they be turned out so much?

You want to screw them in the exact same turns you screwed them out.
Ditto for the small.

The slows are push-in. You'll need a fairly hard pull with grips or pliers to remove them. When refitting, just gently tap them all the way home. The mains are screw-in. Screw them back in all the way and then just a snug, to prevent them from vibrating loose.

RJ is I believe refering to the IMS screws but you are not attending to those at present.

The IMS screws are the ones directly below the pilots in your picture. They are usually set at the specified number of turns out, from gently seated, according to your manual. If you have anything other than the stock airbox/exhaust system however you may need to adjust them further to find the correct setting.
Whilst you have the carbs off, verify that the accelerator pump is working, and that the float levels are set correctly. All the info you need can be found using the search facility and FAQ, and you will always find folk here to help out too.

There are several reasons for hard starting, which may or may not be due to, or affected by carburation. Once you are happy that the carbs are scrupulously clean and working, do the 3K tune-up leaving carb synch until last.

Download the shop manual for the 750 from this sites FAQ section.  Look for the MANUALS FAQ thread
Everything is listed there in the Periodic Maintenance section.
It will involve setting the valve lash, timing and advance, cam chain adjustment, carb tuning and vacuum sync, and oil change, among other items.

also my neighbor said he can take my carbs to work and put them in the sonic?? cleaner machine. What parts should be taken off for this to happen without damage?

just grab the slow jets with pliers.  pull straight out.  twist gently.
scarring on the outside is ok, just dont crush them  ;D

for the sonic cleaner, yeah, its a good way to clean them, but  i'd be wary of the solution.
it may dissolve soft parts....ie., accel pump diaphragm, o-rings, fuel lines.
Just ask what the solution is and if its safe for rubber parts.
Most here tend to use simple green(not pinesol)

the ultrasonic cleaner will not, however, get those tiny passages clean.  you should still do that manually.
accel pump passages, jet holes, etc....
