The Best Health Of My Life!!!
« on: June 04, 2014, 04:37:46 pm »
So after I finally admitted to myself that I hit a point in my life where I reached my heaviest weight...213 lbs... and really wasn't feeling well...I decided to do something about it.

I began a fitness regimen and started training like my life depended on it...because it did!  No matter how hard I trained...I was stuck.  I believe Nutrition is a majority of this battle...not just for me but many people.  My good friend Shiela turned me onto a Nutritional System that she incorporated into her daily routine.  I watched not only her body transform...but her health.  I was still skeptical to try myself because I tried every "diet" on the planet.  Shiela really took the time to educate me and I learned more and more that this wasn't about deprivation but was something that would leave me feeling ALIVE.

I'm so happy that my skepticism didn't get the best of me.  I overcame my barriers and reached my goal weight of 170lbs and never felt better.  I traded fat for lean muscle, was completely satiated at all times, and this fit into my hectic lifestyle perfectly. I have taken my life back and most important....gotten myself healthy for my children!

Congrats Digger! What you did takes dedication and hard work. You can have all the money and all the things it can buy, but if you don't have your health you have nothing. If your 6 foot under your sure can't ride your sohc4.

Congrats Digger, looking great! How tall are you? Lean mass is what I've been pursuing for years now and have had some luck. Muscle weighs a lot more but is a takes a lot less room, its just unfortunate that every time I go over 175lbs, my lower lumbar start getting crushed and I dial back on my regimen. Also, its a shame we haven't met up yet being in the Chicago area. Lets fix that ;)

Workouts are pretty straightforward. Cardio on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. Weightlifting Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Nutrition is all based around a wonderful system that my friend shared with me. I would never have gotten where I am now without it! I would love to share it with you all if you are ready to take the first step towards improving your health. Shoot me a PM with your phone number and I will call you and explain it, because you are gonna have questions and I want to be able to answer them concisely.

And edwardmorris, I know EXACTLY how you feel! I have two herniated discs at L4/L5 and L5/S1, and that was a big part of the reason I had to make a change. Since I've reached my goal weight, my back pain has been a thing of the past!!!

Good job man, that is amazing!  You are absolutely right about nutrition being the number one aspect of an individuals weight.  It is actually pretty amazing when you look at how adjustments in macro-nutrients can change how one bulks or slims and makes gains in the gym.

Digger,

As I was winding down my military career, I reached the same point you did.  I was up to about 185 (I'm barely 5'7") and I just felt fat and miserable.  I completely gave up alcohol, soda, and tea (I put way too much sugar in it).  I lost a LOT of weight in little more than a month.  People didn't even recognize me from a distance.  I ended up at about 160 at my lightest and ran my last fitness test 1.5 mile run in about 10:30.  For youngsters that's not going to set any records but I was pushing 40.  The comments I got from people were what I remember the most.  I had a guy in the post office ask me one day to join his MMA/gym outfit.  In line at McDonalds one day a guy bumped into me and his buddy said, "Hey, watch that guy I don't want my a$$ kicked."  After I retired, I wasn't able to go to the gym as much but I still run (and walk a little  :-X) around 10 miles a week normally.  I'm around 175 or so now.  You look a lot younger than me, I wish I had this epiphany years ago.  No telling what kind of bad-a$$ I could have been  :D  Eating is my downfall though.  I gots to eat...

I'm 5'9", and was pushing 180lbs when my already bad back started completely giving out. Started with weight training and cardio, much like Digger's alternating schedule along with whole food diets and abandoning processed foods. 7 weeks later, went to the DMV for license renewal, best compliment I got from the worst employee there "Good lord! what happened to your face?!" referring to my old chubby cheeks on the expiring license and my current chiseled look :P Just have to stick it out, them whole grains taste like crap, but boy do they work.

Making the decision to be healthy is easy. Getting there can be the hard part. It's amazing when somebody is able to leave their old self behind and become their best self. I applaud you. The best feeling though, is helping someone else make the transition!!!

Don't put too much faith in BMI indexes, they are a poor way of  sorting out your weight, I have seen very fit people come up as over weight or obese using that system, they don't account for height to muscle ratio and simple things like that, they should only ever be used as a guide and for some, or completely ignored, get fit {exercise}and eat good food, thats the only way to assure yourself of reasonable health, oh, and don't get run over, that helps.... ;D ;)

I would actually caution against relying on these. Your BMI cannot be calculated on height and weight alone because it does not take into account how much lean muscle you have. At the very least, you have to take measurements of various parts of your body to calculate an approximate BMI.

This is a more accurate calculator:
http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html

It put me at 11% body fat as opposed to 25% from the charts.
