Dyna coils, very happy camper!
« on: June 08, 2014, 06:05:19 PM »
I have been running a dyna s for many years and decided to replace the coils and wires for this spring and I'm very happy with the result.  I had read on one of Hondaman's posts that the stock coils don't have time to cycle fully at higher rpms, with the 5 ohm black dynas and the new wires I can really feel a difference at full steam with the new coils.  Anyone NOT running aftermarket coils with the Dyna should strongly consider it IMHO

Starts and idles great, and pulled an indicated 180km/h on today's ride.

 :)

My GL1000 was running terribly until I replaced the coils with Dyna. What a difference. So I replaced the ones on my 750 too. It was running pretty well anyway so no noticeable difference. Sure nice having replaceable wires though. I kept the points on both bikes and use Hondaman's ignition module on both. For me, that's the best combination. I don't trust aftermarket pointless ignition systems.

How do you/we know it is the coils and not the new wires, not the new (?) caps, not the (new?) spark plugs?

Dyna S easy to replace with stock points when its cabling use the OEM harness. Just unplug the blue, yellow and the additional red (12V) to Dyna s unit. In with points and it's rotor, reconnect the blue, yellow and run.
I might order a complete TEC base plate when finding one for a good price just for sure. Today Dyna S with black 5 ohms coils.

well i thought you cant replace just the leads on the old coils?  maybe you can but is it really worth trying to recycle 40 year old coils , for not much $?

Hmm. This whole site is about recycling 40 year old bikes. What 40 year old parts do you think are worthy of use?

Coils aren't something I'd "recycle."  Use 'em if they're good, but junk 'em if they're not.  Who wants to go down the road spitting and sputtering anyway?

Points/Coils, battery, all rubber parts, wheel bearings, steering bearings, swingarm bushings, final drive, rear brake pads (if drum).  All those parts I would consider NOT suitable for "recycling."   Anything else on the bike should be fine if it's in ok condition.

Well I used crusty 3 yr old spark plugs when I changed the coils, so in know it wasn't a handful of plugs that improved it.

Could well be the fresh wires and caps but I sure can't be arsed to futz around with the work involved with getting new wires on 37 yr old coils when, there's posts on here stating that Dyna S ignition and stock coils aren't optimal.

definitely tanks, wheels, forks, frames, brakes, pretty much anything that can be rebuilt, restored to as good or better than new!

but hmm shot wheel bearings? do you really try and 'fix' them? heck no grab some new ones and ride on...

same with a brittle leads/coil unit.

Its dangerous enough riding a bike..then add with just the one arm!
I need my bike running & handling good, and stopping better.  Zero issues ditching the stock  rotor,  springs for new better parts.

I'm in the same boat with you. Hondamans ignition and my DYNA coils. But! To each his own and if it works for you right on ! The coils really do improve things enormously.
