Need Help with Dyna electronic ignition install
« on: June 24, 2014, 03:53:46 AM »
Hi, i have installed a dyna electronic ignition unit on my 74 cb550, i'm using my stock coils.

i installed it and set the timing as per the instructions but it just wont start!

My test light is lighting up when i'm holding the rotor to fully advanced and my notch is lined up with the advanced timing marks, then when i release the rotor to its standard position my light is coming on when the F mark is lining up with the notch. Hopefully that made sense!

can anyone think of anything as i'm all out of ideas! any help would be greatly appreciated!

Try swapping the wires to the coils...believe it's the blue and yellow.

Do you have the instructions?
You can get them online probably.

Here's what I found:

http://www.dynaonline.com/skins/downloads/instruct/DS1-1_1-2.pdf

Did you tap into the kill switch wires going into the coils?

Lucky as I said I fitted it as per the instructions. I took the active from the black/white wire from the coils as per instructions, I've tested it and I have 12v. Obviously I'm getting power to the ignition unit because the test light is coming on. I can try swapping the blue and yellow but I don't think the polarity is wrong other wise my test light wouldn't come on when the 1-4 F mark lines up with the notch on my blue wire that goes to the 1-4 coil. I guess I need to check if I have spark, I can hear it clicking and my test light illuminates. My battery went flat before I had a chance.

Thanks for the suggestions

My Dyna worked direct. The instruction with circuit diagram cannot be clearer.

I have an OEM ign plate coming all the way from the US and A :-)
TEC.... I'll try that to see if my charging detecting LED will be happier when I have headlight on, today not green. Only with parking light (EU version).

This is a must to verify if battery will be drained or not before it happen! I'm convinced that DYNA eat amps...

if your battery is poor or flat the unit wont operate, they have a minimum voltage requirement.

This is my third bike with dyna ignition, my last bike that had a dyna ignition would run with a 100% dead battery just a kick and boom she would start. I'll try swapping the blue and yellow wires. Thanks for the advice

wouldntve been 100% dead, they probably wont run under about 8 volts, might be ok on a motor with permanent magnet alternator?

You WON"T kick start an old CB 500,550,750 with a 100% flat battery ever, they NEED battery power to create a magnetic field in the alternator , otherwise they won't start at all... ;)

I tested the voltage going to the dyna unit and I was getting 12V so the reason it's not starting can't be due to dead battery.

My old cb750 with dyna would kick over even when my battery was so flat it wouldn't light up my head light.

I'll try swapping the blue and yellow wires tonight but I would have thought by using a test light doing the timing wouldn't have worked it it was crossed polarity? When I hooked the light up to the blue wire and then lined up 1-4 with the notch and the light came on surely that means my polarity is correct.

swapping blue and yellow over isn't polarity, itll swap the ignition 180 if that's what the problem is,that or swap the 1/4 and 2/3 leads over.

The blue and yellow leads are the 1-4 and 2-3 leads

correct, they are the earthing leads for the coils, power is supplied via blk/white stripe and splits in two for each coil, the blue/yellow completes the circuit for the coils, checked for spark?

And I bet the bike will start right up once you swap the blue and yellow wires.  And it only takes 2 minutes to do so.

I'm at work so I'll be trying it as soon as I get home!!! Can't wait. I have heard of someone getting a unit from dyna with the incorrect colour coding of the yellow/blue so hopefully that's the case.

Okay so I swapped the yellow and the blue, all that did was make my motor backfire very loud when trying to start. I've got spark and the plugs are wet.

Any ideas?

Maybe the spark is weak?

If it's backfiring then they were probably correct to begin with..

Agreed, your wiring was correct initially. You indicate the "bike won't start" but give no other details. Provide some more info and then you can get further diagnosis assistance.

The starter motor is turning the bike over nicely, it's just not firing, it's not even showing signs of firing. I've got spark but I think it might be a bit weak. Timing is set perfectly. All my fuses are good. Kill switch is not in the off position. Fuel tap is on, fuel is flowing. Freshly charged battery.

You've confirmed 12v to the a Dyna ignition, but what do you get at the coils? And have you checked the resistance reading at the plug caps? Stock coils or aftermarket? Are the plugs good? And double check the continuity at the Kill switch. These can be problematic if they're not in properly maintained condition.
