1980 CB125s tachometer install

Hey guys,

I was lucky enough to get my hands on a beautiful 1980 Honda Cb125s.  As a result, here I am!  This is my visit to the forum as such I hope I'm in the right place.

The bikes super low miles and in fantastic condition.  I think its a blast to ride and would be hard for me to change a thing about it... except, I want a tachometer!  How easy would it be to hook up a tach from a previous year?  It looks like a cpl connections coming from the tach on other speedo\tach's.  Is my bike ready to be plugged up or would additional wiring be done.. or realistically possible?

I our bike did not come with a mechanical tach from the factory, then adding one that is mechanical is impractical. You can add an electronic unit easily. These typically draw rev info from the coil. You can search about for an electronic unit that uses an analog dial and aesthetically resembles the stock gauge.

Try Speedhut.com and see if you can customize the face (one of their best festures) to get close.

Thanks for the info, Ill definitely look into doing that.

The main concern is I have no idea where the RPMs are for tuning or shifting.  I'm definitely shifting within the safe range, I just wish I knew where I was exactly in that range.  Also, when riding with other (louder) motorcycles its hard for me to hear anything as far as when to shift, going by speed, feel, etc.

Is there a cheap and easy way to hook up a temp tach for tuning?

Temp or permanent it's got to be an electronic unit as far as I know. Your bike has no apparent mechanical tach gear, so have no idea how you'd rig one up.

Most multi-meters have an rpm setting.  You can pick one up from an auto parts store for relatively cheap and they're great for other stuff too, volt, continuity, ect.
