Some new riders were asking about the wave a while back. I explained to them how back when I started riding (80s), Harley waved to Harley, Jap waved to Jap, Nobody waved to BMW, and Jap and Harley flipped each other off. ;D

Times sure have changed. Back in the mid-seventies some sort of recognition was common as there were far fewer of us. Treatment by the general public was far different as well. I had decided to ride from Ann Arbor to Montauk Point on Long Island (grew up on the island). I made an overnight stop at a motel in Pennsylvania.  I asked the desk where the safest place would be to park the bike. The response was to park right in front of the office and they would keep an eye on it for me. Can't see that happening today.  :-\
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

LOL Greggo !  ;D  I buzz around on a little 50cc Honda express quite often here in Westmoreland Co. PA. and I've had full size Goldwing & Harley riders waving at ME  :o,on my little 50 ! I suppose not too many folks will return a wave to riders anymore... I don't mind though, once I get over the Shock  :o  ;)  :)

Ha ha - that's a great list - I'd have to add to Harley riders:

#11: They're too petrified to take their hands of the bars because they decided to buy their first bike at 55 years old and spent $23,000 on a 700 lb Road King.

I try to return waves, esp if it's wide open and no distractions. But I've seen some obviously new riders who seem more excited about waving than they are about ensuring they're making a proper line through a corner  :o

If there's traffic or I'm maneuvering, I'll give a tilt of the head or flick a finger while still keeping my hands on the grips - my mind is always first and foremost on the road.

And grcamna2 - I love waving at scooters and smaller bikes - they always seem caught off guard. But I ride everything from a 1500cc cruiser to my little CL175 - if it's got two wheels and a motor, it works for me!

I've been thinking about this lately here in 2014(maybe it's taken me a bit longer than it should have)that it's the Driver of the bike/vehicle that matters, not as much what we're driving....;try selling that to a custom chopped Harley dude  ::)  :o  :)

I took this from the thread I posted earlier, just for visibility. These are funny too

Top Ten Reasons Why Dual Purpose Riders Don't Wave Back

10. Off road elbow guards, chest protector, fanny pack, drink system binds them up.
9. Bark busters and gummy grips slows the hand from raising quickly.
7. Just can't take time out from doing that 10 mile wheelie through traffic.
9. He's passing street bikes off road on the right @ 60mph through the trees & rocks.
6. Too busy checking his enduro roll chart doing mental time/mile math so he wont blow the next check point.
5. Can't see other bikers through his 20 layers of tear off's.
4. The dude only recognizes Honda's with every after market race part known to man.
3. His killer 2 inch tall knobies vibrate so bad vision is obscured.
2. The chin guard on his full face helmet sticks out so much it blocks his view.
1. He's got his Mauna Kea 200 race face on and can't be bothered.

Top Ten Reasons Why Moped & Rukcus Riders Don't Wave Back

10. Scared ****less to remove a hand from the bar's.
9.Never road this fast on a two wheel anything before.
8. Full focus three inches from front tire.
7. Freeked out on the extreme right side of the road dogging broken beer bottles and car accident trash.
6. Don't want to lose their grocery's in plastic bags hanging from the bar's.
5. Won't deter from the full attention military riding position.
4. Their mother & grandmother told them it was very, very dangerous.
3. Think it's hoodlum stunt riding.
2. Don't want to chance getting a reckless driving ticket.
1. 25 mph is too damn fast to try something stupid like that.

Well I know most of this is meant in fun but I can honestly say only time I don't wave to anybody on two wheels with an engine is I feel road conditions don't permit, corner and such but I always at least try to nod

Ive noticed scooter riders haven't got the wave thing yet, maybe they're worried losing their European shoulder bag.
 ;)

I've given a full quick wave before and many riders have given me the 'one finger' index finger wave,I used to wonder what that was about... but now I realize that it's 'solid', they're just keeping both hands on the bars and paying full attention while lifting one 'cool' digit to wave, Now I 'get it'  ???  :)  ;)
