badly cracking Bridgestone BT45 rear
« on: July 14, 2014, 04:03:49 PM »
Hey guys i know there is alot of talk on here about the Bridgestone BT-45 tires, I was just going over my bike as i do regularly and found something a little alarming. this cracking is happening on a 4 year old BT-45 rear. The crack on the right when lifted a little shows the cording in the tire, the other cracks are in every tread block all the way around the tire. the tire is getting to the end of its life but this is a little concerning to me.. last thing i need is an explosive blow out or the tread coming off.

Anyways if your running these tires please check for your safety and other than that happy riding...

I think these are gonna be getting replaced in the next week or two, if anybody has some recommendations im looking for:

Front  100/90-19
Rear   110/90-18
the bike is a 1971 CB450

I've got a brand new set of Avon Road Riders in the inch size if you want them. I bought them for a project, and decided to switch to wider rims. They're new in shipping package, bought 90 days ago.

Most of those cracks look like they are in the tread blocks, it would be worse if they were either between the tread blocks or in the side walls. I would keep my eyes on them but wouldn't be panicking just yet, its probably got more to do with the tires age than anything else...... ;)

I have had no problem with BT45s, but that does not mean you don't or I can;t. Thanks for the tip and congratulations on making a good catch. I will check mine over!

Better safe than sorry.   My mind would be racing in a hard turn when you give power to complete and you are down low.

Are those cracks 360 degrees all the way around the tire ?

Curious....what is the date of manufacture of the tire? It's on the sidewall.

Good catch. They probably won't chunk off but what if they did?

tire was made middle of 2010 so its not like its overly aged.  Im trying to go price some new rubber today either Avon AM26 road rider or Metzler Lasertec's,  its not a 750 its my 450 so i only have a 110 rear on there and that further limits my choices.

Avons come in inch size (also) as was standard on your bike. Perhaps you would find more choices using that unit of measure.

There's little difference in the tires elsewise, but using the stock dims does insure a proper fitment on stock rims.
