550 K Engine Problems??
« on: July 23, 2014, 05:14:58 pm »
The other day I was riding and felt the bike starting to sputter and a decrease in horse power. I ride it every chance I can so I know I don't have old gas. My first thought was that the Carbs need cleaned, even though I did that 2 years ago. Other possibilities are that their may be sediment in the fuel lines that need flushed out. I will try that this weekend.

If anyone has had a similar problem or has any insight on this issue please let me know.

Thanks everyone

Chris G

Your limited description would lead me to suspect carbs. When you cleaned the carbs, did you also inspect thoroughly the gas tank? Is there any rust inside there that may be sending some debris to the carbs?

Do you use an inline fuel filter? A quick check would be to unscrew the bowl drain and see if fuel is coming from each carb. If you really want to be thorough, you could capture the gas retrieved from each carb to verify the fuel level per carb (bike on center stand).

Top of my head ideas...

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
