Signal Lights Problem, Please Help
« on: July 25, 2014, 08:14:16 AM »
So last thing to do on my bike is to get all my lights I'm working order. Problem is that my front signals don't blink although the running lights do function. For the rear signals, the left one blinks but the other does not. Headlight and brake light function as well as the blinker lights on my handlebars.  Anyone have a clue as to what my problem may be, I've been tinkering and checking ground connections but with no success.

Year and model?

Your statement that the front signals don't blink... but the handlebars do... Confuses me. Do you mean the indicators for the front don't flash but the idiot lights (on huge handle bar clamp do? I get that the rear works.

Are these stock lights and bulbs?

Sorry I always forget to be more specific,
1977 CB 550k
Stock lights
The indicators that are located where neutral and oil light is on handlebars work
The front signals don't blink but running lights work perfect
Only one of the rear lights work

Just a wild thought but if you are using an aftermarket three prong flasher relay, check the orientation that they wires are plugged in. I just had this problem on a new wired bike and on the first time turning key on to check everything,  my front running lights worked. Front signals would come on but not blink. Rear did not come on so did not blink. Dash panel light were lighting up. Checked all wiring/connections and discovered I had plugged the flasher (three prong) in wrong.

I'm pretty sure bulbs have been switched but are the proper bulbs

I had ordered a new 12v flasher online cause I thought it was maybe the problem but turns out the original flasher and new one have the same result. They are 2 pronged flasher relays

Cluster lights aren't involved in the indicator circuits. These are powered independently. You could have a ground problem, a switch (at the handlebar) problem, or more likely a poor connection in the headlight bucket and/or under the seat. I suspect headlight bucket...

:-\Here's your wiring diagram. Get a beer or two, and grab some dielectric grease, some small scrub brushes, and a stool. Time to start checking connections  :-\

Haven't gotten there yet, but what if after-market turn signals only have 2 wires, a red (12+) and black ground? Does the red get connected to both the blue and blue/white for right front orange and orange/white for the left front?

Kk what's the best method to use that grease ? I just picked some up, do I just go 1 wire at a time? Am I better off undoing them all and re starting ?

If you are organized and patient enough, unplug them all, clean them (the bullet connectors inside and out) and apply a small amount to the male end, then reconnect. Test each circuit before proceeding to the next.

So I've tested the left hand controls and they are in perfect shape, I've ruled out a ground issue with the front lights since the running lights do work and same as with left rear signal (also works).
Right rear ground seems to be fina, any I can test to see if it's good?
I Also tried to test the other side of the connection (since I assumed it should be the same connectivity) can anyone confirm that? And I found one that was not working, would those set of wire be my problem?

Sorry if I'm not to clear at some points in this post
Thx for the help

A continuity test from your rear light to ground is a good test to conduct. I'm not sure about the "other side" test you ran???

I found instructions on how to test the left hand controls. That's the one on the left, and everything matched up to this

If I test it to the female end should I get same results?

Continuity, yes. Voltage no.

The grey comes from the turn signal relay. Have you checked that unit as well?

The signal relay is the two pronged 12v  flasher ? I bought a new one cause I thought it may be the problem but I get the same result with new and old flasher.
