$50 bought me this project - CB750F1
« on: August 15, 2014, 07:50:28 PM »
I bought this bike three years ago and after I got it running, I got sidetracked with other projects so it sat.  Here's a link to my original post: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=92485.msg1032045;topicseen#msg1032045

Price: $50.  With a title.

Disassembly:

Gordon frame kit install

The tank I picked up on Ebay wasn't bad but had a poorly done Kreme relining so a gallon of acetone dissolved it all and a new POR15 tank lining took it's place.  I picked up some VW metallic silver and BMW metallic grey and some striping tape.  I've never done strips before but I'm pretty happy with the results.  I bead blasted the tank badges and polished the raised surfaces.

epoxy primer:

VW silver

taping the stripes

BMW metallic grey

I was waiting for the tape to pull up the silver but everything worked out great.  I think the trick was pulling the tape off about 15 minutes after the last coat of grey.

Working on the engine now.  I honed the cylinders and will put in new rings.  I decided not to split the case.

Beautiful work mate, the F1 cornered the market in Fugly, but yours is looking superb! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I looked like it lived the life of the abused red-headed stepchild. And the it got tortured on a stretch rack before finally getting some love.

Looking good now.

Used the wintergreen oil trick to soften the intake boots.  Screw jack made quick work of installing the carbs.

Throw the tank on and see what I've got.

That is my kind of build. Turning what looks like a pile of scrap into a gem.  ;)

Build is looking great! Did you ever figure out exactly what year the frame and engine are? I just read your first original thread about this bike and seems like it was a bastard of different years.

I've been taking a bunch of photos along the way but haven't posted anything in awhile.  So below are a couple of quick videos.  I've checked the timing and sync'd the carbs.

http://youtu.be/gZZCKBfuLV4

Today I rode it for the first time.  Holy #$%* is it way different than my 360.  I did some minor adjustment of the idle mixture screws.  I only went up and down my street a few times. Need to secure the seat and figure out why the starter stopped working.  I think I pulled a connection apart cramming everything in that little box.

I did the same with my F1 and found later that the primary chains weren't as good as I thought. Had to pull it out again. Managed to replace them without dismantling the top end.

There are very few cafe bike projects that I like or would consider owning or being seen riding and that is one of them.
Great work so far!!!   8)
