Cb550 question
« on: August 24, 2014, 03:51:24 PM »
Can you use carbs from a cb650 on a cb550?  Just wondering.  I've heard of 650 camshafts being used on 550's

The PD50/51 series mechanic carbs can be used (If you can find any). The VB series CV vacuum carbs can not.
The PD50/51 carbs are 26mm compared to the 550's 22mm.
They might be a bit tough to get seated into the intake boots. Heat, and a touch of lube will help. If your old intake boots are old, and hard. You will likely want to replace them.

Yes you *can*.  But why would you?  The larger carb throats will ruin street throttle response, and only be of any benefit when the throttle is 3/4 to full open.  If all you want is a track bike, then go for it.  Be prepared for a lengthy rejetting game.
