Got the bike running but bogs down
« on: August 31, 2014, 08:45:02 pm »
So I got the bike running again today. CB500. Ran once when I got and hasn't been driven since 1991.

Here is the list of things done:
Carbs rebuilt by a forum member
Cleaned petcock
Sealed tank
Replaced with Dyna s ignition
Replaced with Dyna coils
New Mac 4-1 exhaust

It sounds a bit loud. It quieted down a bit once I tightened the exhaust down a bit more.

Giving gas bogs it down as shown in video.

I have 627B carbs. Harisuluv moved needle clip to 5th from top from 4th from top and used 110 main jets.

Again, you can hear a little metal clinging, it's the exhaust loose by the peg.

The first time it was ran since 1991

Buying new plugs in the morning to see if that helps. They look a bit rough.

sounds like you got the coils/spark plug wires in the wrong order somehow or the timing is wayyyyyyyy off...surprising it even ran like that at all. definitely not running on all four cylinders...
If it works good, it looks good...

Huh. Some reason I thought it was 1-4  and  2-3.?

Can some one confirm.
Left side blue - plug 1 and plug 4. Doesn't matter which one the boot goes on.

Right side blue - 2-3 and again it does not matter which boot it sits on as long as it is 2 and 3?

It ran good after those plugs were swapped.

Hi Soner, so you had to swap the spark plugs or the plug caps/wires

I ended up switching out the plugs and the firing order. It now starts up between the first or second kick and does not bog at all. After adjusting the idle to 1200 rpm. I am very happy where it sits.

While the video sounds horrible, listen to the ticking noise. In person it sounds great minus the ticking. I moved my potato closer to the motor so you can hear it; sounds like it's under water. Is this a valve adjustment thing?

yeah sounds way better than the first video.  hard to tell from the sound, but does the ticking go away or get better when you pull in the clutch?

What about the slide needle position and idle jet size?
What kind of air filter?

That would be a question for harisuluv. I should probably ask that as well. I believe he used stock all the way around except 110 main jet. I am using velocity stacks.
I think at this point I just need to get the rims in from cognitomoto so I can drive and test it along with a clutch cable to see if the noise goes away when pulling the clutch in.
If the noise does go away when pulling in the clutch, what does that mean?

If the rotor is mounted 180 degrees wrong you will get it to work when connecting blue-yellow, yellow-blue. If yes, correct rotor and wires. I know...somehow :)

You can expect some clutch noise, that's normal.  Excessive might mean you would need to investigate it further.

110 mains, stock idles (40) and the needle clip position changed from 4th to 5th from top.  Without the needle clip change you would probably have carb related bogging.  Lucky has a database of settings so he can add it to his if it works for you.

I did not Dave. I didn't realize the Dyna needed that. I'm heading over to the FAQ right away to see what I find.
