So the head gasket is actually in my lap. If it has been torqued down can it go back on or should I get a new one?

No problem Franky, let me know if you have any photo requests. If I haven't assembled that part already or if I have a picture that I haven't posted I'd be happy to oblige.

Work's been pretty busy lately so haven't been able to button things up yet. But tonight I got the clutch on and clutch cover sealed up. Went pretty smooth.

More progress today. Put the cylinders and head back on with the cam and sprocket. Next seems to be the final buttoning up.

The chain went on the sprocket with ease (it's described well in the FAQ) but then it was a bear trying to get it on the cam. I used a little prying action with a screw driver and then it popped on just fine. Maybe because it was a new chain and didn't stretch yet.

Just from another post I shoved rags down the cam chain area. If a little bolt jumped down there it would suck. I urge you to do the same.

Will you be putting anything on the pucks to help seal/keep them from moving?

I'm not sure. From factory there isn't anything helping them. I got OEM replacements so I wouldn't think I'd need anything. I'll do some more research. Any suggestions?

Around that area where the pucks seat, I usually clean with acetone, then smear a bit of hondabond on it.  Seat the pucks and wrap everything up.

I don't have Hondabond, but I do have a Permatex hardening gasket sealer. Will that work? I also have a non hardening one.

Just use a light coat of the same stuff you sealed the crankcase with.

I used Loctite 518 and that's an anaerobic sealer designed for zero tolerance aluminum flanges. It won't cure if used on the rubber nut sealing pucks. It'll just stay a gel and could get washed off by the oil.

Found Hondaman talking about using Permatex non-hardening stuff around the rubber sealing pucks. I'll do the same.

I also see he used more of that sealant around the cam chain tunnel on the head gasket surface. I definitely didn't do that, haha. He seems to use sealant in many strategic areas so I'm curious how leaky mine will be...

4. Add sealant around the whole cam chain tunnel. Honda did: I'm sure it was important!

Are you using Permatex no.2? The same stuff as what you use with the pucks under the cam tower?

I was considering spraying the whole head gasket down with Copper Spray a Gasket, but am open to a different approach if you have found a better solution.

Oh, and I'll PM you for a set of those o-rings for my K4.

Thanks
Dan

Yeah, their non-hardening stuff. I really wish I could find some FelCoBond, but they don't sell it around here anymore. That stuff was excellent for this task, especially on the old CB/CL72/77 engines which had nothing sealing these passages but the head gasket. They often leaked, more than a little. It strongly resembled rubber cement, but was oil- and gas-proof.

I like to use the hardening stuff around the peaks of the cam chain tunnel, only nip those 6mm screws down plus a little, the pucks you can use just about anything I use the non hardening there.

Ok thanks, I'll definitely do the non-hardening for the pucks. Do you think it's a problem that I didn't put any sealer by the cam chain tunnel? Is that a requirement or just for precaution? I also didn't add any sealer on the o-rings by the base gasket or head gasket.

I had permatex for all the main gaskets. Not sure how well it worked as I had a nasty head gasket leak which I'm currently fixing. I am also in the process of removing the permatex from where the pucks were. It's a PITA to remove!

That's another thing I've been thinking about. If I did/do seal this up like Fort Knox how painful it'll be when I take it all apart again. I've used the Permatex hardening stuff and acetone and even mineral spirits works alright removing it.

Thanks guys, I'll post pictures of what I end up doing.

Just installed the rubber nut sealing pucks. I used some of this:

Laid a small bead in the groove. Then placed the pucks and squished and twisted them down...

Then ran my finger to clean and smooth the remaining sealant.

To be totally honest, I've never sweated it.  I lost one of those things, so i manufactured a new one by cutting it out of a old KLR650 rear tire inner tube.  It didn't leak, move, shift, or even sit cleanly in the hole.

I'm not recommending that of course, but I just don't worry about them, they seem to seal just fine on their own.

Dave- not to be an "alarmist", but that cam looks a wee bit worn from the pictures. Did you have that examined with an instrument for face wear or runout? Rockers good too?

Perhaps this was all covered weeks ago (pages ago in the thread) and it's moot now?

No, please, alarm away. I posted a picture of the journals and cam earlier and it was said that they were ok. It feels super smooth. I know it would be best to replace the head but that's not money I have right now.

What do your Elven eyes see? I didn't check the cam with any instrument... Aside from my finger nail.

It could just be the picture, but I see "burnishing" on the lobes. That is an indication of wear, but not always worn.

What you need to verify is the lobe across its width is flat, and that the rocker travels along the lobe without peaks and valleys.if you were diligent and kept your rockers in sequence to their original location, whatever wear occurred will still be "mated or matched" lobe-to-tappet, so it's less of an issue. But I see small disfiguring in the edge of lobes that would make me want to inspect them closely.

Recently, I bought a used cam and the seller indicated no wear, very good condition. Uh, not so much. Upon receipt, it looked like yours, and an instrument validated .03 of wear on the lobe edge/edge. Completely unusable. Maybe ok to get a motor to run, but not for a rebuild/major project.

Pictures can be deceiving, so this may all be unnecessary. I'd just have a good session at least with quality Verviers and measure top to bottom in each lobe at 3 points along the overall length. It may be sufficient to determine wear or no wear. (Since you're instaled already).

Yup, I never removed the rockers so they're still mated. I'll measure them with my digital calipers tomorrow. If it's out of spec can the cam be replaced alone or do the rockers have to be replaced too? Or the head machined?

The cam does not require the rockers be changed, but the rockers and the cam usually wear together. So...

Head should not require any machining to change the cam. The bearings and journals were fine, right? Just make sure if you get a new/used cam it's better than yours and you I don't get crap for your troubles.
