CB650 -- Is It Worth It??
« on: September 22, 2014, 01:14:30 PM »
So this guy has a few bikes for sale, and in particular an 82 CB650.

http://raleigh.craigslist.org/mcy/4673143516.html

The ad says there is a hole in the motor, but other than that the bike is complete and looks fairly decent in the pictures. I just want it for the cam in the motor to swap into my 550, and plan on parting out the rest. Do 650 parts usually sell quick? I don't want to spend much time on this because I've still got a lot of work to do on the 550. Thoughts?

If it has a hole in the engine make sure that it did not run for long with no oil in it. That could eat the cam up.

If I get it i'll be making a post in the For Sale thread, and I'll make sure to keep you in mind.

Didn't even think about that, thanks.

For the $250 price tag he has on it with title. You really can't go wrong.

If you get it. I would save you the hassle of parting it out.
You keep the cam. I'll buy the rest of the bike.
With a guaranteed good cam in the deal.

If it has a hole in the engine make sure that it did not run for long with no oil in it. That could eat the cam up.
If the cam is cooked. It may still be good for a regrind.

Look at the third pic from the end. It may be only the petcock o-ring, but guess what that tank looks like inside! Not Good!

Well I went and saw it and sure enough there is a hole the size of a quarter in the engine case. Bought it anyways and I'm going back tomorrow to load it up in my buddy's truck.

If you get it I get first shot at tank and side covers if they are decent. ;D
I couldn't open the tank cause he didn't have any keys for it, but you can hear gas sloshing around in it so hopefully it isn't that rusty. Oh, and the PO said it's only been sitting for about 3 years since the motor blew.

Does the engine turn over easily? (Hope so) Is there oil under the valve adjustment caps? Or is it at least not dry and a bit burnt smelling (the  worst is if it smells at all like smurfs were in there welding?). That cam made a HUGE positive difference on how my big bore 550 runs.  Just wakes the bike right up -- ND plugs and rejet (described in another post).  But Jim Dour at Megacycle cams or webcam and I think cycleX can provide an all new camshaft lobed like the 650 cam, so given the risk of old steel and scoring and love face west in an unknown engine, IMHO it would have to add up to be a lot cheaper than just getting the new part you want and need.  I bought the used 650 cam because it was already parted out and I could see it was good too go-- and it was half $ what a new one would cost me
