1978 cb550 case oil seals

Hello:

I read somewhere on this forum that the crankshaft end seals should have a lip on them.

I just bought a set of seals and they do not have the lip. Should I buy some somewhere else with the lips?

Are they the 35 dollar red packaged set off ebay? I have those on one engine and got another set on the way. I wouldn't worry.

I had the exact same question on the same bike in my crank case splitting thread. You might want to read through this to answer future questions. I think it's #136 here:

Dave500 said he'd probably get one with a lip and that's what I did. Found all OEM seals in the crank case and bought them from Partzilla and DavidSilverSpares. That being said, the ones I bought look to be fine quality compared to the Honda ones. The lip would obviously prevent the seal from creeping out the side but there is another large seal (I think the largest in diameter) which is around the drive sprocket shaft which Honda did not design with a lip on this particular bike.

Yes it is the red one from ebay.

I did go ahead and order the honda parts from partzilla.  I only want to do this job once!

all the other seals like kicker/shifter/output shaft etc are only splashed from behind with oil,the main crankshaft ones are holding back up to say 60 + psi of hot pressurised oil,id be using the lipped ones incase they blow out.

Ah, well that makes sense. Then the lip seems pretty important. Glad I got OEM.

Nope. If you're talking about case sealant Loctite makes something that I used on my cases called Loctite 518 (NOT 515). (Motor still has yet to be started up to see if it seals well.)

Now a lot of other people like different stuff and they'll all push their brand. Hondabond, Loctite, Permatex, Gasgacinch, Yamabonda, etc.

I used Loctite 518 because it will stay gooey pretty much indefinitely until you join the cases. And that was nice so I could take my time putting them together. The other stuff has a set time.

Unless you're not talking about case sealants; in that case this post is worthless.
