Question For Those With Pods
« on: October 28, 2014, 02:57:51 PM »
I'm close to starting my '78 550k from an engine rebuild and will soon be joining the poorly running motorcycle club because I have pods. (Joke, I'm not wanting to start another popcorn thread.)

My question is how necessary it is to support the inlet side of the carbs when using pods? Do you do it? If not, ever have the pods shake loose? I thought it was absolutely necessary but these stiff rubber boots are pretty damn strong. And my carbs seem very secure.

If I WAS to do it I don't know if it would be a good idea to have a bracket made of metal holding (I'll call it the rear) up, since Honda has the carbs suspended completely by rubber. I'd think that would help with dampening vibration considering there's delicate parts inside.

Thoughts?

Ditto. And the pods should have band clamps to keep them affixed to the carb.

Like a well fit bra, my carbs are supported by just the intakes.
You want a little shake to keep things exciting.

Don't agree folks :-\. The OEM rubbers are stiff, but you can see them pulsing at tickover and the rack is quite heavy. Factor in vibration and bumps, and you can see they are taking a lot of unnecessary stress if the rack is not supported. I've had them split prematurely, usually at the top of the rubber where the band is tight, engine side. Doesn't take much to fab a bracket to support them for peace of mind.

Agreed that if you can fab a quick bracket it's best. But I never follow my own instructions and have run pod filters on a lot of motorcycles (ones with banks of 2 and 4 carbs) without issue for a while.

I've got a CB750. Ran it with Mikunis and Pods for 50,000+ miles over 15 years. I supported the carbs with a chain of zipties over the backbone tube. Settled the pulsing and vibration down nicely. Don't know if it was even needed though. Always ran great and latest reincarnation is same way.

Ok cool, thanks guys. I'll probably end up making a hard rubber hangar but I won't dwell on it too much.
