exhaust pipes
« on: October 28, 2014, 03:35:44 PM »
Found some pipes, HM341. Reasonably decent shape. A few dents. Some minor surface rust. End baffles removed and looks like somebody took a punch and punched another hole beside inner outlets. No heat guards. Its a bike shop guy and he's  asking $800. What do you think of that price? Other thoughts?
Thanks

Not worth it. Better pipes on eBay for 500 or so

That's a lot of money for rusty dented HM341s. At $800 I'd be looking at repop HM300s for $2k or whatever they're going for these days.

I went through the same thought process with my rebuild. Unfortunately I got sucked into a deal for $600 + postage that a guy was selling me a full set of great condition HM341's.

They rocked up in July last year from interstate and I opened up and checked one of the pipes and it was a 341. Put them in the shed and then January this year took them out and put them on the bike to finish my build. Unfortunately Ihe sold me 2 x HM300 and 2 x HM341's. He apologised but wouldn't give my money back because it was an honest mistake.

Then I kept looking for other second hand ones to make a set. Anyway long story short I ended up with a set of brand new no number pipes from Yamiya for $1800 including import taxes. I would have gone new aftermarket 4 into 2 if I was short on the cash.

If the money is too much which for a lot of people it is and it's just that I was cashed up at the time then I would look for a new aftermarket replacement of 4 into 2 or 1 until the money came in. After all my research I felt that even if I got a good looking set they were still 40 years old and could blow out any time.

I just feel that you can chase problems with old pipes. I just hung up my originals from my GL1000 and put on new aftermarket MAC 4 into 2. Could be happier. They are about $500 new in the states or a couple of thousand if I wanted originals.

Mate bought a second hand set from interstate not long ago and same thing happened to him. They turned up and now he had to sell them because they were that bad.

Just my 2.2 cents (the .2 is inflation)

Thanks for the input.
Yeah hard time thinking about that much for old pipes that are pretty good but flawed. I have been looking at other alternatives as well but the lure of original for a restoration is understandable. Will look into the Yamiya ones. hadn't considered them in awhile.

Thanks all

.2 of a cent better than inflation and we don't even have pennies in Canada anymore!!
