All, two stroke bikes.

I can relate to that.  2 stroke was great to start with for me - learning how to handle that little 250 down the hill to make sure it still goes up the hill fast enough, but the smoke, the dirty exhaust.

I actually like the smell of two stroke to some extent  :)

Anybody ever travelled East Germany before the wall came down?  The majority of DDR cars were two strokes.

They weren't all dirty ! In the heyday of my RD400 (Lovely bike - wish I still had it) I was running it on Bel Ray synthetic at 50:1 with silenced expansion chambers that I designed myself. Twice during the season I cut open the chambers to find that the steel on the inside was absolutely clean, and the bore and bearings also in top condition. They really only got smelly and smokey if driven round town a lot, the crankcases got polluted with unburnt oil and it would take a good thrash to clear it out.

I still have an NSR250, must get it running someday, should turn a few heads as two smokes are very rare here ! (except for 50ccs)

You are right, Kev.  2 stroke needs run hard to clean up.

I also have a K7 that I can't get to fired up to finish up. Just not the same feel as the early bikes. Wish somebody in Michigan would come on over and give this ole' girl a nice new home-hint hint

Ever notice that 2 stroke bikes don't have rusted out exhaust systems?

Lotta oily goo in there. Good idea to pull your baffles off that 500 Steve and give them a good burn or inspect. I have put them in my woodburner for a bit in the winter to 'clean' them up.

It is pretty hideous. If I get motivated to work on it it will be gone.

Remember them well! travelled quite often to Berlin on the Transit Autobahn.
Had a stint on a Suzi 550 2 stroke and a few RD's. Not bad bikes, but needed a lot of TLC.
Biggest POS on 2 wheels I've come across is a Russian Molotow aka BMW 750 knock-off.

Remember those rhytmical Autobahns?  Concrete panel joint every 5 feet or so?  We would go from Czechoslovakia to Rugen in one day, that was something, LOL.

The russian built BMW was not a knock off actually, since they moved the whole original BMW factory - it was made in CCCP but on the same machines.   Friend in Prague had one of those with powered sidecars, now that was a treat to wrench on.

@70CB750

Czechoslovakia to Rugen in one day! wow, quite a distance and then on the old Autobahn. Yes I remember the gaps between the concrete surface and the big (unmarked) potholes as well.
I was always annoyed that you couldn't cross the Transit Autobahn by bike, at least not from the west at Helmstedt or Hof to Berlin.

Maybe you've had better luck with russian boxer engined bikes, but the Dnepr and Ural/Molotow ones I've had to deal with were just heaps of junk.

When in high school I wanted the 72 CB350, but had to settle for a new CL175. Bought my 72 CB350K local last April with 6,300 miles to refurbish and run. Turned out real nice, but after riding the 750's for so long there is no comparison. So I got the 350 need out of my system and sold it a month later. Don't get me wrong, I think the 350 has a great place in the hearts of Honda collectors and is a nice looking bike. I just got spoiled on the 4 cylinders. I have to say though that 350 was better than the 360 I refurbished a couple years before that though.

I am with you on Dnepr, the quality was horrible. It was the only vehicle I ever worked on where metal shavings in oil pan were ok. It came like that from the factory. Also the metalurgy was not up to the task - and russian way to fix any problem was to beef it up.

I heard they got better in last 10 years or so.
